Are you familiar with the base west of Ft.Hood that was shut down in 64 that was the a site for Nuclear weapons underground with a huge runway. The Army maintained the site and the Air Force maintained the airfield. I revisited the place couple yrs ago and was able to drive up to the entrance of the underground portal where many many weapons were in and out for service. Sure brought a lot of memories. Showed the wife the site as she never knew what i did just thought it was a job in the Army. We dismantled the Fat Boys there. We were the largest of 10 sites and the only one the Army maintaned. What an experience as we lived in Killeen when it was dry.

Wow what a super clip i remember all those western guys they were part of my childhood. Today if the actor cant curse for five minutes they wont put him in the movie.I miss those good old days.

Gene, O My Yes,,,,Robert Gray Army Airfield with that runway that is almost 2 miles long. Fully loaded C-5 Galaxys take off with no problems at all.
What you are talking about are the "Holes" Or "the Tunnels". Yes, I am full aware of its existance, and their original intent.
My Daddy was a Civil Service employee from 1952 to 1978 At the Electric Shop. Back while Gray Base was still a "Classified facility" up till the late 60s early 70s. My daddy and one other feller were the only two men, out of the Electric Shop to have FBI Clearences to do any maintaine work out there, fix switches, R/R electric fixtures etc, etc. Far as I know ever shop had to have a couple of men to do what ever maintaince that might need to be done ie...Electric, Plumming, Carpentry, etc, etc.
Did you ever see the 2 generator units that were back in there? Pistons the size of 30 gal barrels!
The armature was about 10 feet in diameter. I have seen them, and knew that one would still run in 1978
I can only immagine what you have seen and heard while you were there. My family knew that Major, very Serious Stuff went on there but... If Daddy knew, he never gave particulars. Just in general stuff! The sort of stuff you could figure out from looking and speculating.
Now you know that Killeen Airport Co-habs with Gray base as far as runway use, the new airport is over on the East side, on Clear Creek Road.
Talk to you Later!
John A.

I now live in the very small town of Matador Tx.,just out of the eastern panhandle of Tx and not too far from the Ok. border.

when i was younger, our neighbor T.C. Morrow owned the horse that Rex Allen rode in the movies. the horse was named Coco or Cocoa (something like that) know some tricks but no one on the Morrow Ranch (18,000 acres)wanted to ride him to work cattle.
to this day i still remember that tc bought the horse cause his wife wanted it.
she should have had to ride it.

hey kito169, were neighbors, I live in between hubbard and dawson. I tell people WACO because I am sure that they are not familiar with the smaller towns!

Yes i seen them they were WORTHINGTONS. Joe Harwell was the civilian who was in charge of them. I was in B company on the north side. A company was on the south side. The portals were the entrances and went back around 150ft then went at an angle of around maybe 30deg another maybe 50ft then turned again. There was a dead end at each turn that went maybe 20ft this was for a mild explosion so the blast wouldnt go straight out the front doors. I did run on to a fellow who lived around 50mi east of there and said they a huge hole built the site then burried it as they said we were around 50 or so deep. Another fellow O.D.Ming who worked for the AEC told me he helped build it and you never told anyone nothing whether you ran a CAT or whatever and sometimes you would not see a certain worker ever again that security was of the utmost. I had a very close call shortly before i was seperated from there on a matter of procedure as i was sent the wrong place as being a short timer my name was not on the list for the daily pass word even though i had a loaded 45 and personally knew everyone i just raised my hands and told the guy on the phone that the MPs were there and what in the he// do i do now he laughed and said hand over the phone to the MPs then go into operations and ask them are you trying to get me rubbed out. This happened after i was told to do the task and i asked are you sure im on the list for the password. E-7 told me to go and stop asking questions as i run this operation. Yes the things that went on and the knowlege was an experience of a life time. I had a wonderful time there i just hope and pray that we never have to use those weapons as there has to be a better way. Would love to meet ya sometime. Had a wonderfull friend east of Temple a Mr KALVIN KREAMER as fellow tractor collector and friend who died a year ago and went to the funeral as HE and wife MARGIE came to IOWA for tractor shows. great to hear from you gene bender
