OT/Buying stock on line

Does one have to use the services of E-Trade,Scott-Trade.etc etc. to buy stock on line or is there a more direct no bs approach? Any opinions and personal experiences welcome.

I use Amertrade. $9 a trade and I can do it in seconds. All on the net. I do have them hold my stocks in my account. No one I know of gets stock certificates any more so you'll need a "street account". Not a big deal.

I'm a greenhorn when it comes to this stuff. When you say per trade what do they mean exactly? Is there a certain minimum or maximum quantity of shares allowed in a trade?

I have been using Scott Trade for 6 years and am very satisfied. Truely only 7 bucks a trade. I have the streaming quotes screen running a lot of the time.

I use both TDAmeritrade and Fidelity for stock purchasing, holding and trading. Really simple to do. Will need to chose to set up as taxable account or IRA or Roth IRA type account. Very easy to do your own research and investment. You can do it instantly on line without phone calls or talking to an advisor.

I"ve been using Ameritrade since long before they joined up with TD. Nothing but good things to say about them. Main thing to watch is its 9 bucks a trade regardless of if you are buying 1 share of XYZ or 10000 shares. Takes a long time to make back the 9 bucks if you only buy 10 shares.
