Perkins Problems

I have a backhoe with a 3 cylinder perkins engine. The last time I was working it I noticed it was getting hot so I checked the coolant and determined it was low. After adding coolant I ran the engine and noticed antifreeze was being pushed out of the overflow on the radiator. Also I can tell the engine smokes more (white smoke) when first started. When the engine is shut downI can hear a gurgling sound coming from the air filter box. It hasn't gotten anything in the engine oil. Do you think I have a head gasket problem or possibly a cracked head?

Yes I think it its possible. One thing I have learned in life and often have trouble remembering is check the simple inexpensive stuff first. A hot engine will often gurgle regardless of how it got hot. Remember check the simple stuff first such as air restriction which could be a dirty radiator slipping fan belt. Water restriction, sludge build up, water pump slipping belt or thermostat. Sometimes if you take radiator cap off you will see little bubbles in the antifreeze solution when you have a problem like you suspect. Remember suspect the worst and check the simplest first.

I have a Super Dexta with the Perkins cloned 152 engine. The head cracked a few years after I purchased it. It seems the Perkins had a problem with those heads cracking for a little while. The replacement head has given no problems for 20yrs. now. Just be aware that that problem did exist a few years ago.
