Liquid in AC instruments

I have a 1959 Series I AC D-17. The Power Booster Gauge and Operation Meter both function but have what appears to be oil in them. An older tractor mechanic told me he had seen a few instruments with oil in them to prevent dust and moisture contamination while sitting outside but could not remember the makes of the tractors involved.

Question 1: Is this a lubricant of a contaminant???
Question 2: Since replacement is fairly expensive, is there a way to remove the liquid and clean these gauges, assuming they should be dry, short of prying off the collar to entirely disassemble them or drilling the cases and flushing the liquid with solvents???

Leave them alone!!
The gauges are not leaking, and they would do so radically if they were being filled from the inside.
The use of oil, or glycerin in a gauge provides dampening to the needle movement, and lubrication to sensitive clock works inside. It is ususlly s sign of a quality analog meter. (my best meter is from Joy manufacturing, and it is calibrated and filled). (0-2000psi) JimN

Janicolson is right. The oil or glycerin in the gauges was put there when assembled. Besides being a lubricant it protects the gauge against viberation which can destroy a gauge in short order. My only concern would be, how do these gauges work if its cold enough to thicken the fluid ?

Fluid in sensitive instruments is usually kerosene. Not a problem in the lower 48. At least not until it goes below -44F. Arrowhead of Minnesota might be an exception on a few days when you wouldn't want to be out on a tractor anyway.

Glycerin filled gauges are of the highest quality gauges. My New Holland baler has one on the hydraulic bale tension system. It came with 0 to 3000 lb and all I need is 100 to 150 for 60 to 80 lb bales. So I found a new 200 lb gauge on Ebay for $5 works great. If you have them on your tractor and they are in good shape then leave them alone. Sometimes the fluid will down a little its OK like this.
