Ford 7700 Dies

I just bought a Ford 7700 with 6000 hrs. on it. It runs for about 2 min. then dies. I let it sit for about 3 minutes and it will start then die after running a few minutes. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If it has the two fuel tanks, check to the rear of the engine on the right side. You'll probably find a shutoff valve (gate) in the hose from the upper to lower tank. Open it...
I'd expect that it't vacuum locking the lower tank where it draws from but when you leave it sit the vacuum is released from the breather line or something along that line.
If that doesn't help... you get to play the airleak game. Specifically, you get to find the airleak.
I'd also change the fuel filter right away as a matter of course.
If you have the upper tank full and can't gravity bleed the filter and pump, you have a flow problem leading to the filter...

Just an idea on top of what Rod said, make sure your top tank is full, run it till it dies and pull the fuel filter real quick and make sure you have a good stream come'n out. My 6700 acted like that one time. Don't know what it was but some'm cloged up a hose. I took a hose loose and there was nothing comeing out. I blew in to it, something gave and I heard bubbles in the tank. I ain't as quick as I used to be, next time I do that I'll use a air hose.

Good luck.

Doesn't sound like an air leak (unless IP is self-bleed). Sounds more like your last comment will fit the bill. A constriction in the fuel supply line - something in tank/fuel lines, lift pump not functioning properly, a collapsed fuel line inner lining, vacuum in tank, dirty filters.

If Paul EO has done nothing to it at all, filters are high on the likely list.

The people I purchased it from said they had just replaced the fuel filter so I suspect they were having this problem and were trying to fix it themselves. Of course I called them and asked them if they"ed had a problem like this and they said know. Both tanks are almost full so I"m going to try running till it dies then I will pull the fuel filter and see if there is a good stream at that point at least I will know if there is some kind of obstruction or vacuum problem. It stands to reason that it would be a vacuum issue since it will restart after a couple of minutes meaning it gives the tank time to breath. Is the fuel cap vented on these and if it is could it be plugged up not letting the tanks breath? And also, how are the tanks connected. I"ve tried the switch on the dash and does it regardless of which tank I have it on or does it matter? Thank you so much for your input!

Yes, the cap is (supposed to be) vented. The switch on the dash is only to change which tank the fuel guage is reading.

don"t forget to check for obstructions in the intake my 504 farmall was doing this darn dirt daubers in the intake

Go to the right side of the tractor and LOOK in above the engine at the back of the tank. You will find the hose and will find the gate valve. Check that it's open.
There's a good chance that if they just changed the filter, they shut the valve off to keep the fuel from running out on the ground, and when they were done, they probably didn't turn the valve back 'ON'.

Both tank should not be bout full. If there is anything in the top tank the bottom should be full. That gate valve needs to be open all the time. You may be pulling from the bottom with out a way for it to vent. The only time I close the valve on my 6700 is when I change filters. If it's closed open it and see what happens.

Good luck.

If your stand'n on the right(as you sit) side of the tractor there should be a gate valve in the (i think 1/2") line that drains the top tank into the bottom tank. It should be kinda between the the stearing colum and vlave cover. If you stand with you left hand on the battery and right hand on the fuel filter squat down and it should be under the hood there.

Hope this helps.
