Do Lighter Colored Asphalt Roof Shingles Last Longer And Do Black Ones Keep More heat in attic?

They sure do reflect more heat from the surface, thus they also stay cooler themselves, thus they deteriorate a bit less, Go for it. No tab shadow look shingles last even longer. JimN
Recently 2 weeks ago completed the shingles on the back part of my roof, went to a lighter shade when I shingled the front side last summer.
Alway's used black shingles, have been looking at colors of shingles over the past five years and it appears more people are changing to lighter colors. Hope these last longer. This time I installed the ridge vent, 40 feet in a 46' roof. Tonight it is raining part of hurricane Kyle, so this will be a test for the new shingles. cheers, Murray

I think shingle choice will depend a lot on where you live and whether your energy needs are greater for heating or air-conditioning.
I would agree that lighter colored shingles will last longer.
I would also mention that many, many, black roof shingles have uneven coloring and---well don't look very nice in my opinion.
I am cold blooded and require a lot of heat. As an example I haven't used air-conditioning since 1997. I guess that tells you that when I re-shingle it will definitely be with a darker shade to draw heat.

Years ago my parents had a cape cod with black shingles. When they had it reshingled with light brown shingles it made a noticeable difference in the upstairs bedrooms. I don't know about how long the shingles were supposed to be good for
When Dad finished the upstairs he did insulate, the downstairs walls had no insulation.
