Heres an easy question......

Say i was working on a tractor with frame rails along the side of the engine. I obvisly couldnt lower and raise the block by hand like on my B or C, and i dont have a hoist. Any ideas here??? Or is it time to go hoist shopping??? Thanks in advance.

Better buy a hoist. Check Craig's list, I've seen some deals on there. Smashed feet hurt for a LONG time

Lanse, you could easily make a frame from 4x4's and bolts if you are going to lift a smaller engine. Just make sure it's braced well. Then you could use a come-a-long to raise it up. Or if you have a barn with some good size beams, you could just loop a chain around one. Of course you should ask your parents permission and only use it for a smaller size engine. I probably woudn't lift anyting bigger than the engine from an M this way.

I'm told that some of the big California dairy operators are being squeezed out and are relocating to Wisconsin.

I have pulled engines on WC Allis and other tractors with a come along but now have a cheap half ton chain hoist. At one time I changed a motor in a 57 Ford car and put a clutch in a B farmall with a rope wire stretcher. I had a friend who was a giant of a fellow and he pulled small block chevy engines with his hands by leaning over the fender.

Lance, time to buy a chain hoist or even a com-a-long will work. You can buy a cheap chain hoist for less then %450 that will do what you need. I picked up one not long ago from Cumans tool a 1 ton for $29.29 and that would be more then enough for what you need

If you have the overhead room and a front end loader just throw a chain over the bucket and use it. I use that for everthing from hoods on my semi to engines or rearends.

I have seen some prices stating that an engine hoist cost around 4-6 thousand ???? you can get one for waaaaaay less than that but in most home garages the roof system is strong enough to support lifting a small engine. I used a beam and went accross 4 rafters and put a chain in the middle of the bean 4x4 or larger then put a chain hoist on it and lifted many engines. even a 351 modified 400 and some guys on here will tell you that in not a (small engine)!!!! As stated before get your parents permission first

A come-a-long is nice but is totally useless if you have nothing to hang it from. The cable type come-a-longs are junk in my opinion. The chain ones are much safer and easier to use. A chain hoist is better than a cable come-a-long but still needs a good mount to hang it from. It's not a good idea to experiment with how strong the trusses in your garage are. A bought a folding engine crane to pull the engine and tranny out of my Cat. It wasn't a real heavy duty one but worked just fine to pick up 1700 lbs. and could have lifted more with the beam all the way in. I got it on sale for $120. I regularly see them from $160 to around $220 for a heavier built one. Much safer and better control than using a loader or something else that isn't really designed for lifting engines and stuff. If you have 2x6s holding up your garage roof, what I did was bolt another 2x6 to one that was braced good and bolted a pole to each end that went to the floor far enough apart to pull the front of my pickup through and pulled a 390 Ford motor and C6 automatic trans with a come a long.I bought the come a long from Sears,Im sure a cheap one would work, but I didnt want to take any chances a 390 is heavy.

I one time had a bunch of 4 inch pipe and a square post from a service station big sign by the road. The square tubing was 2 pieces of channel that somebody made with a brake that were welded together.I made a cherry picker out of it.It was real strong, but I never was able to find another piece of square tubing to slide inside it so it wasnt adjustable. After I made that I saw one that was made with riding mower tires on it.You could use it out in the driveway in the rocks, just wouldnt go under anything without jacking it up first so those flotation tires would clear.Something like that would maybe work for you, since you are in FFA they might let you make it in the shop, providing they let you use power tools and a welder. If you have a bottle jack you can build it to where you can use your bottle jack for the lift,or they do make jacks just for stuff like that you can get from auto parts stores or Harbor Freight.

Sorry, but Im gonna throw the BS flag on this one, I dont care how big or strong you are! a small block chevy weighs nearly 700 lbs, not to mention moving around all the stuff thats in the way to get it out!

Guess I won't tell ya about the time a buddy and I lifted a buttoned up Chevy 396 COMPLETE motor out of his Chevelle with a rope slung under the pan and over our shoulders..........

Consider a boom that mounts on the 3 point. That was how my Dad and little brother changed an engine in a Monte Carlo.

If you're working inside, in a building that has a good strong conventional 'web' truss on 4' or smaller spacings, I'd throw a 4x4 over 2 trusses and attach a come-along to the 4x4. It'll easily lift that little engine.
If you want cheap, the cable variety will do. If you want better, get a set of 1 tonne chainfalls.
When working, lifting... eyes and ears open.

Beyond that, I'd drop it to the floor on a floor jack. BT/DT. Don't let the safety nazi's see you.

How many GOOD jacks do you have? Lift her from about the flywheel, with enuf cribbing 2 support all. Then you can MAYBE use good floor jack to lift engine clear. Cherry pickers (engine hoists) are cheap, around 150 bucks or so if you watch the Orshelin, Farm King, Farm and Home, etc, sale bills. NOT regular price, but on sale. DOUG

Lance, if I am remembering correctly you have a loader on that Kubota tractor and that would be a good way to pull that WC engine

50 years ago my Dad pulled WC and WD engines using a wire stretcher- half inch rope--with a 5x8 wood beam in the shop ceiling, 14 feet wide. That's all we had for hoisting anything. You do not hook near the clutch- that is too rearward. If you are on a WC, get some two inch channel, drill four holes to match those on the valve tappet cover. Weld a hook in the center of that- works fine for pulling a WC or similar engine.

A hydraulic "cherry picker" type engine hoist is a good investment. Check prices at Advance Auto, Auto Zone, TSC, Homier Tool, other auto stores, Craig"s List, and local "for sale" listings. The type with folding "front legs" are very handy and easy to store when not in use. The ease and control offered by these hoists make them a "joy" to use and the enhanced safety is an added benefit. They also come in handy for many other tasks that require lifting or hoisting heavy things that will fall fast and hit hard if something fails. One trip to the emergency room costs a lot more than one of these hoists especially if you get it on sale. Funerals are even more expensive and much less pleasant for all concerned. Be careful, and be safe. Good luck.

Aloha,
In my younger days, I braced the end of a mango tree limb with a 4x4 and used a chain fall to lift out a 327ci with trans from a 66' SS nova. Any tree's in your yard??

Mahalo,

Well, not sure about 700 lbs. I scaled the motors from my race car . Ford 302 I believe it was 465 lbs no exhaust or alternator . 351 windsor was close to 500. I read a ready to drop in 350 was 575 with cast iron heads . short block would still be a load to haul out over a fender ,not saying it couldn't be done . I'd think hood off standing in engine compartment, maybe?? I think it'd be great idea for next Strongman competition ! lol

Can you weld ? If so , build a cheap "A" frame with wheels on it , use chain hist < 30-50 $ > You'll wonder how you ever got along without it .
Lots of places to find plans. One kid in shop class made his out of old drive shafts . Cad-plans has some differant hoist plans, or "Machine Builders network " good place also .

lance, if you cannot afford to buy a hoist right now, rent one!!! you"re dealing with a fair amount of weight, and if you try and fab up some type of home-made lift, things can go real wrong-real fast. engine hoist will prolly rent for 25-50 dollars for the day, rent it to remove the motor, then when you are going to re-install it, rent it again. if you drop the motor with a homemade lift, not only could you seriuosly hurt yourself, you could also crack the block or tip the tractor over.

poor mans way, (trust me I know) take a chain and two boomers, with one next to each other... one at a time make them hoist the chain up, might use a cheater pipe!! take it slow and gentle and please, becarefull!!!!
