OT tool box question

went to go and see about getting me a new tool box yesterday Sears is offering a 16 drawer qiute glide series for around 280+tax was wondering if anyone has had one of the boxes i know craftsmen is a reptuable name just wondering if there boxes hold up to it.

Not sure which you were looking at, they have red and black now. Seems the black cost more and have better roller/glides. I like snap on but many years old and probably couldn't afford them new now.
I think there is a plant in Iowa building under two brand names. Maybe someone can shed some light on them?? Bob

How well it lasts probably depends on how hard it gets used. If it doesn't have roller bearings on the slides and you are more than a weekend warrior, you will be disapointed.

I have one of the "quiet-glide" boxes and so far I really like it, even more so with the reasonable price. I have about 12 craftsman boxes dating from the 70"s to current, and have yet to get one that was not satisfactory.

OK someone mentioned Waterloo boxes. The way I understand it Waterloo makes the boxes for Craftsman. Don"t know anything abou the quiet glide but I would suggest getting roller bearing slides. Guessing they are one in the same but at the price you quoted maybe not.

Personally the last time I bought a box I looked at craftsman and strongly considered them. Wound up buying a used snap on and love it. I do think the snap on boxes are built better. The craftsman seemed a little flimsy to me.

If your want to drop the coin check with a couple of snap on dealers in your area and see what they have for used stuff. Those dealers are always trading. Just depends on if they are willing to sell to someone they don"t know. My local dealer is a bit obnoxious about this but I wound up buying from his boss.

JM2CW your milage may vary

Waterloo toolboxes are made at Sedalia,Missouri and where else I dont know.Since I live about 50 miles from Sedalia I drive by their factory every time I go to Sedalia. They make toolboxes for lots of companies, dont know which ones right now,but they did make Craftsman tool boxes at one time, maybe still do.

The Cobalt boxes at Lowe's are pretty impressive box and good prices.

I'm anti-Craftsman. Had 'nuf of their CRAP!! Been years since I've been in a Sears store and don't miss it.

I havwe had a Craftsman box for 15 years. It gets used pretty hard. No problems with it. I love it. Others may be just as good but could not be any better.

i have two boxes that are master mechanic like them pretty good they have ball bearing drawers also. in fact in comparing to craftsman, husky, kobalt i liked these best. alot of the skilled trade guys at my work have kennedy boxes but i dont know where the public can get them

I like the looks of the Kobalt and Craftsman Stainless steel boxes. (OK so I'm a little partial to the metal) Only problem is I'm too practical so I cannot justify the expense for just "good looks".

I have the quiet glides and they are nice. They open and close nicely. However, if I was to do it again, I would seriously consider the ball bearing ones. Once the drawers get a little heavy, they are a little tougher to open and close. just my 2 cents.

i have a lot of entry- to mid-level techs that have craftsman boxes...they always trade up to snap-on or mac when they start making money, but for nothing other than looks/ status. I've bought a number of their used craftsman boxes for my personal use and like 'em just fine, often filled 'em with tools bought at auctions and yard sales and sold 'em at good prices to " up and coming" tire techs who want to become mechanics- assembled a set like this for my son also. Lots of craftsman boxes in shops, both red and black (old and new). WAAAAY less expensive than the tool truck brands, seem to do substantially the same thing!
I like to see the Snap-Ons and MACs in my shops though- it means my techs are way in debt and will be working hard! Like to see employee parking full of new trucks and vettes for the same reason!

Used to have a Waterloo box. Bought it because I'm originally from Waterloo Ia. It started to sag under the weight it gained over a few years. Traded up to a Snap On box. It will fit in the back of a full size pickup, but that pickup better be a 1 ton.
Anything you buy, make sure it at least has roller drawer slides. If you go to Sears, get their professional series. Cheaper boxes tend to sag when they get full.

Brian, I've been twisting nuts and bolts for over 31 years for a living and several before that on my own cars/trucks/motorcycles. I finally upgraded to an MB1500 MAC box back in '02- it was five years old then and couldn't believe the difference the ball bearing slides make. My old Snap-On boxes were nineteen tears old and been in out the back of pickups hundreds of times, so I got my money's worth from them. If nothing else, the energy and time saved opening and closing the drawers makes it worth the extra money for ball bearing slides. Snap-On and Craftsman have neat ways to lock/unlatch the drawers better than others do with their slide/grip latch handles. Like one of the other guys said- catch a Snap-On,MAC or Matco dealer somewhere and see what he's got for trade-ins. They'll usually make you a deal if you offer cash or a credit card to pay all at one time! Good luck.

Yeah,I know a couple of truck drivers from over at Pilot Grove. One of them has a Minneapolis Moline pulling tractor, the other one moved to Blackburn a few years back.I have driven through Pilot Grove once a long time ago, dont have much need to go that way unless I was just drivin around.I went to California,Mo a while back and cut through Arrow Rock and down through Pilot Grove somehow trying to take a short cut and see a different territory with the big truck.Seems like there is a low overpass down there somewhere about to 50 Highway maybe.

I come from the north from Marshall into Sedalia on HWY 65,you probably come into Sedalia on 50 HWY.Waterloo is over there by TCI which was Bandag who sell recaps for big truck tires on the north side of town, just a little down the road and on the other side from where Payless Cashways had that big warehouse before they went bankrupt and right close to the new Caterpillar place. You might see if they will sell you a box if you want one.I think they used to sell them to their employees at a discount, dont know about now.
