My 99 F150 odometer is the LED type and it goes on and off as it pleases. It maintains the correct mileage, just illumination goes on and off. Any guesses as to what might cause this???

Gary

Actually, likely the displays are liquid crystal units.

Have you tried unpluging the cluster and cleaning the contacts with electrical contact cleaner?

(READ the label to make sure you don't have the kind that will harm plastics!)

For some of the GM stuff, they recommended "burnishing" oxidized contacts with a common pencil eraser. Don't know if that's "kosher" for Fords, though!

I'll try to post the link for ford truck enthusiasts then search the forums for your truck someone on there has the fix step by step with good pictures. Good luck, Mike

Hey Gary I just fixed mine last week on my 1999 Expedition it was a bad solder joint where the ribbon plugs into board, took me about an hour to take it out, repair it and put it back together.
This is a very common problem on F150 and Expeditions built in that era, Google "Ford Odometer Problem" and you will see lots of sites telling you how to repair it.
the trickiest part of the whole thing was removing the headlight switch, turn the lights on, pull the knob out, insert a small screwdriver in the tiny hole and remove the knob, turn the knob 180 degrees and reinstall it, turn the knob to release the switch from the bezel.
Be sure and remove the battery cable before starting!!

One of my favorite write-ups is still "Will Not Work In Off Mode."

Leave for Osan 4 Nov, going F-16's. Threw follow-on back, will play equal list. If I don't get Kirtland or Cannon I'll pull chocks. Do you think Eastern NM / Texas Panhandle can cope with another retired 462? I'm not winning many battles, most likely be settling there. Looking for real estate in area. You might see the 1/2 S Ranch or EUROTEX Inc. in the not so distant future.

Good Luck with the odometer on your pickup.
Jim
