fluid capacities for a 1938 A

My friend just bought a 38 john deere A yesterday.Beautifully redone.Sounds wonderful and price was very fair for both parties. The seller delivered the tractor today. Left a note to my friend that there was NO WATER in the radiator. Our questions to all of you are:1. would there be a reason if all was square that he wouldnt have coolant in the radiator?2. How much coolant does this thing take? and lastly where do we find manuals or any info on this tractor. She is a beauty and he cant wait to,I say rip his shoulder off, he says start and play with this green toy.

It was normal not to use antifreeze, just plain water. The thermosifon cooling system worked better with water than an antifreeze and then there is the cost of that much antifreeze, do not remember how much our 38 A held but it has been 48 year since we had it. The other poster said 7 gallon, I would have thought more as the late A held more. But you figure the 7 gallon capacity then you are talking 3 1/2 gallons and at $8+ per gallon that is $28+ just to fill it up and as there is no water pump to trap water they were just drained whenever it was thought it might get down to freezing with the tractor shut off and when ready for use again just refilled for the day and drained again at night. He left it without water so you would not let it freeze and bust but he also told you not to run it till you filled the radiator so you would not overheat it.
