Ford 601 Workmaster- Rotary Tiller ?

Hello everyone,
I have a Ford 601 Workmaster and I love it. I wanted to invest in a 5ft. Gear Driven Rotary Tiller for the PTO. My question is is this tractor have enough horsepower to operate the Tiller. Does anyone else have a Rotary tiller on there 601. Thanks in advance.

You've got about 32h.p. at the PTO, so it should be enough... However... it depends more on which transmission you have, if it will do a satisfactory job with a tiller. If you have the 4-speed, forget it. 1st is too fast. 5-speed, MAYBE. 5-speed with live PTO, a bit better, but still only MAYBE. (and some will tell you that 1st on the 5-speed is still too fast.) If you have the Select-O-Speed, you have independant PTO and gears low enough to use a tiller.

As Fordfarmer already posted - the 601 is pretty useless with a rear tiller or a rear snowblower unless it has the SelectoSpeed. Four speed is way to fast in 1st or reverse, and the five speed is better - but not perfect. Only good fix is - to have a Hupp aux, Everett Trencher aux, or a F&T aux. added to the rear of the tractor trans - or just get a different tractor.

Four speed in 1st goes over 3 MPH at high RPMs and almost 4 MPH in reverse.

Five speed in 1st goes 2 MPH at full throttle which is much better - but still too fast in very hard ground with a rear tiller. Soft ground it does OK. Reverse is faster than with the four speed and no good with a rear snow blower.

I've got a 641 (601 with a four speed). It has the 134 gas engine. I use it for bush hogging only and even for that it's not the best. The non-live PTO is a constant headache - even with the added over-running clutch.

I bought a British IH B-275 for $800 and it is worlds better then my Ford 641. Live PT0, live hydraulics, differential lock, dual range trans (8 forward and 2 reverse). I use a five foot rear tiller in very hard ground and it works great.

I also have a Deere 1020 with again -dual range trans - 8 speeds forward and 2 reverse - and it too works great with a tiller.

That is not the tractor to have for rototilling. Between the little lightweight hydraulic arms, the low horsepower, and the way too high gearing, its clearly the wrong tractor for rototilling. Look for a tractor with a creep gear for rototilling with atleast ten more horsepower.

I doubt the horsepower would be a problem, just the ground speed. I bush hog with a Ford 641 with the 134 gas engine, and with my B275 IH with the 144 diesel. Both are just about exactly the same horsepower. Technically, the Ford 134 is a few horse more. With the IH, I run a five-foot King Kutter rear tiller in very hard ground and don't lack power. In new, very hard ground the engine gets pretty hot after a while, and in softer ground there's no problem at all. I tilled four acres this spring with it.

Sometimes in a pinch we would borrow my uncle's 8n to pull tobacco trailers in the field. 1st gear was way too fast and the exhaust out the bottom bothered the croppers. He recently bought a 4' tiller and hooked it to it to see how it did, but the tractor went way too fast.

I don't have a Ford- -Have a MF with creeper gears. IDEAL for rototilling- - Would you believe .3 mph in 1st/creeper, full throttle?
