How many work on grain bins?

And how many have worked on bins that have had grain in them for bout 2 years,, and have problems when they dont unload. How about an old setup that hasnt been used in a long time, and have to go in and rebuild the drying floor, clean up, etc etc, to be ready for use. How about getting ill after a season of work. Or say having to help work inside the bin, working on a stirrator, or unplugging a loaded bin, from the dust etc from the air inside the bins?

Ive always used some sort of mask, or respirator, but sometimes its not enough to keep the air good enough to keep contaminates out. But being in one for 8 or more hours working, its hard to not keep from some kind of inhalation, or skin contact with the stuff inside the bins. So, I usually end up feeling real bad for a few weeks after a job like this.

Ive been in this line of work for many years, worked side by side with my dad, and at one time, the shop he worked for was the only place that offered that kind of work, and had so much business, that we were in 5 different bins a week, and sometimes more on service calls. Id say it was like that for years,, and after a while, things get all fixed up and the run for a long time with little problems, so work slows down. And some of the bins Ive been into would make ya puke from the smell alone from the stagnet air in a full bin on a 80+degree day. Not all the times we wore respirators,,, some times we were in and out with a quick repair,, but not always. Id say 50% of the time we went in with nothing at all, as far as masks, respirators.

While searching the web, I ran across a story of a guy who was a millwright, and had taken ill and they found a fungus of somesort that had built up in his body from years and years of exposure. A good freind of mine had gotten ill a while back and had it too in his lungs, when he decided to sell off the corn in the bin, and was inthere for about a year and a half, and plugged up,, and he worked for days in there to unplug it. Soon after that, he was ill enough that he had to be carried to the car and to the hospital. Hospitals were dumbfounded!!! Never seen this before!! Needless to say, he went somewhere else and found treatment and good diagnosis, and he is fine today. His dad called me yesterday and told me a story that had happened to him years back too. I was kinda inshock when he told me this,,, and I never knew this was possible!

I dont work on bins anymore,,, a while back, I found it to be that if I go up inthere for even 5 minutes, I feel ill a few minutes after being in one. I wonder now if I have this fungus built up and should go get looked at. My dad is like that too,,, he seen more time than I had, but I was young, and seemed like then I could hack it and be fine,, but that was a long time ago too!! He would be ill for weeks, sometimes months. He went and had a test done and they found this fungus all over inside him. He is in treatment for it,, and the doc said that I should be checked for it too being that I worked side by side with him.

Any fellas on here ever been in this situation??? How bad can this fungus infection get, and what am I looking at if real damage has been caused by it? No DR around here knows,,, most are under the age of 35 and using computers seem to be the trick fix for anything,, needless to say I dont want to go to a place that dont know what they are seeing. Right?? Figured asking on here cause first hand experience is found more with experience that it has happened to somebody before. See what Im saying?? Thank you and any info would be greatly appreciated.

Its called "farmers' lung disease" and can be extremely serious.Mouldy grain, mould hay, livestock dust are the common source. The longer it goes untreated, the more serious it becomes...resulting in symptons similar to emphazema (sp?), advanced pneumonia, etc.Eventually takes away the ability of your lungs to function....like trying to breathe through a drinking straw. Seek competent medical help ASAP. Good luck and keep us posted.

As far as I know there are a couple of things: The fungus exposure is one problem and dust exposure is another.

Woodworkers, farmers, factory workers etc all have trouble with the dust exposure, builds up in the lungs, no way for the body to expel it.

The fungus is different and can act like you say. I believe there are whole body yeast infections too (similar to fungus) called candita albita or something like that that can knock the wind outta your sails for years.

My Dad went thru this 30 years ago and we celebrated his 88th birthday last January. It was an old country Doc that knew how to treat this.

Thanks fellas! Now its not in the lungs,, they found it in the stomach and esapagus. From what I have been told, it goes from organ to organ and spreads over time. With as much time as we spent in the bin, espcially emtpy dirty bins, breathing thru the mouth and it goes right into your stomach you swallow each time. The test is positive for the fungus forsure,, but we never knew it grows, and cant expell it. Im talking years and years of exposure here,, not just a few times,,, Im talking alot of exposure. Thanks again, and Ill pass this site info on to the Doc.

HI Guys ,I think I have FARMERS LUNG Disease ,,Steadily gets worse each year . I am 51,now ,,Hot drought conditions LIKE now , And some harvest crops with dust nearly ruin Me after 1pm , BUT not all crops or Hay ,, just depends on weather, Humidity ,Temp , and mold condition AND WHATEVER FOODS I EAT , Although so far I have not been able to identify a food cause ,,,,Therefore it is impossible to tell if there is something I should avoid , And I refuse to not do something because it could Make me sick ,, because it does not happen all the time.. Sometimes if the humidity is not too high I rally in the late afternoon and can go like the wind , i USUALLY do OK in the AM . Today came in around 5 and wife noticed that I am loving the AC air. CAME IN HUFFING AND PUFFINN.<>
First , got it at age 18 when a dryer fan gave up and the Milo was probably 20%.. Had to get it out , and i was in the bin shoveling.. Spent a week in the hospital at 18 Milo ,,,, again age 28, from cellulose Insulation ,, ,and age 37 Pneumonia and Exhaustion .. perhaps Caused by hog manure , I luved hoggs, .. Quite raising them for a lot of reasons , One of them was HEALTH .! ..
I want to understand this problem More , 1st wife could not understand Why I got sick ,occassionally , My brothers All wonder , When tossing hay ,Why I get Winded And They dont , "Come ON JIM, GET YOUR 2nd wind ".
Currently I believe that if I am outside I will work developing a headache long before I cant get my breath and my legs get weak and My speech slurs and thought process fuzzes up .. Then I either hop on a tractor or anything ,Less Strenuous ,, Run errands in Town with AC,, I have learned to work around it ,, But it gets worse each Year , And I do less each Year and I HATE IT ,, It looks Like to those that know me xcasually I am weak and uncaring , AND I KNOW I AM NEITHER , I Just get sick and have not Found a complete Cure , I have tried Inhaler nebulizers , bee pollen ,vitamins, And Psuedo and antihistamine with some decent results. THANX FOR THE LINK , Please help with More Info. My e-mail is open , Blessings Jim

It's been thirty years since the last time I worked in a grain bin, but I wouldn't go inside one today without a respirator. Last time I did I was sick for a day; I guess I'm allergic to grain dust.

I wonder what they did back then to help him for this. Been told the fungus can grow and worsen with every exposure. It creates scar tissue where ever it comes in contact with. I wonder if this has ever been mistaken for cancer....

Jim, I am 33, and what you describe to me is how I feel most days. I have worked on bins for a while, and quit cuase each time I got sick for days. Dad is worse than I,, they belive it to be in his belly and to me from what I read on the site link, the stuff grows inside ya, keeps growing too, with or without exposure. My freind went to IU in Indy and they fixed him up,,,,, and his dad had a place in his lungs that started like a ZIT in his lungs,,, they had to poke him with a long needle to go in and get this out of his lungs,,, then on some sort of herb,,, and he said he hasnt had problems since,,,, My dad is going to go in for a second conformation on the fungus infection in his belly,, the exposure has left behind scar tissue,,, he has lost so much weight its not funny. Last year, this time of year he was 230#'s yesterday he is 185 and flat on his back sick, and getting worse. If I find out any info from his thearpy, Ill be sure to pass it along to you if any thing is possible to help.

(quoted from post at 15:04:28 09/24/08) Its hot and dusty dry now , and I am in AC,,and not huffin and puffin..My weight is good ,and I feel good in AC,,, But This is getting Worse each year
