Shotgun question

I have been looking at buying a shotgun, home defense, getting rid of skunks, and coons. I was planning on buying new, but I have an old double barrel 12 ga my dad gave me. It is in excellent condition. It is a very common gun, a Stevens 311, so I am not worried about changing it. How much do you think it would cost to shorten up the barrels? I think 18.5 inches is the minimum. Now they are 30 in.

If the Stevens 311 is nice I wouldn't fool with it, remember that you can't go back. Get a used 500 Mossberg, barrels and accessories are readily available and it is reliable. I use one with a 20 inch barrel and #2 steel shot for close-quarters varmint defense.

Never was much on destroying a good old clean gun. Get a barking dog. Most home invasions are over before you could get out of bed without a barking dog..

Remington 870 will be what you should look at or similar ones.

Only takes 3 inch off the end to remove the choke will make a good quail gun to boot.

That is the best gun for the job. I would do nothing to it. It makes no difference as most any load will be highly effective.

I"d much rather save that 311 than chop it off. True, they are not a fine Parker double, but once it"s hacked off...it"s next to worthless, looks like Hell and ruined. Why cut it in the first place? Have you ever been in a gunfight where the barrels caused you trouble? You plan on carrying it Johnny Yuma style? You reckon a skunk knows the difference in a 30" barrel or an 18"? Take care of that gun...it"s a keepsake from your dad. Spend $200 on a used Mossberg riot gun if the cool and handy factor is that necessary.

I once knew a moron who chopped off his grandfathers Winchester model 24 double. No, the 24 isn"t the same as a 21. But it was worth a lot more before....as compared to very little afterwards.

I have a double barrel Eclipse shotgun with hammers and it has a brass "Wells Fargo Denver" badge enlaid into the stock. Do you know what its worth? It is in good condition.

Hi Spook,

Remember that "Ruby Hill" was started over a 1/4" of shotgun barrel length. It was the argument of where to measure from that made this case. The man still lost his wife and son before it was over with him spending a few years in jail before being released.

I'm not completely sure, but with a short barrel and a pistol grip stock, it's classed as a " assult weapon". Your State laws may have a say so on this one.

Another case here in AZ where gun laws are pretty abundant, Sam's peers was NOT asked to consider Sam's choice of weapon or ammo but when the jurer's were polled after convicting Sam, they commented that Sam was carrying a 10mm pistol and the local police on caryy a 9mm. Sam also was using hollow points and the local police do not.

The reason I memtioned the above cases as they were both on 60 Minutes or Dateline or 20/20, if you want to watch the full story.

I bought a used remington pump long barrell once and cut it off some. It ruined the pattern for hunting. I sold it to my son who had it cut more and added screw in choke tubes. Made a very nice gun out of it. It could be done right with choke tubes and make a nice useable gun. And not cost all that much.

Spook, I have an old Garcia-Rossi Stagecoach model side x side, with twin exterior hammers and twin triggers. It came standard with 18.5 in barrels. I love it, it is my bed gun!
As far as cutting your barrels down to 18.5, I would Not ruin a gun My Dad gave me, Unless I could buy a barrel to cut down or buy one all ready shortened with chokes already installed. Again do not cut your original barrels, find another to cut down or find a shorter one. This is because you may to put it back original some time.
or bettr yet find a nice Stagecoach model shotgun ready to go as others have said. Hope this helps!

Check out the Stoeger site, They have several varities of the coach gun and your local gun shop probably has them. They also have the short/home defense semi auto for that nice quiet sneek up on them skunks.

i think t-bone meant RUBY RIDGE in idaho
3/8 of an inch anyways, save the 311 for hunting
stoger has a selection of coach guns short as you wanted butin my opinion many a would be confrontation with a criminal has beenn avoided by the unmistakeable sound of apump action shot gun racking in a shell!!!!
p/s RUBY RIDGE IS A INTETRESTING STORY CHECK INTO THE FACTS

I have no intention of making something illegal. I probably will just go out and buy a new or used pump gun. Just thinking.

Hi Spook,

I didn't think that you did but wanted to bring to your attention what "other" results were as those too had no intentions of illegal goals.

Thanks too Joe for the "Ruby Ridge" correction.

There are gun value websites on the net. Check them out. The NRA has a book also that gives gun values. I just saw info in the American rifleman magazine.

get a old mossberg 500 and buy the factory 18" barrel or an old 870 rem would work better ,don't destroy the stephens as there gaining in value .and #6 heavy field loads make the best home defence rounds less recoil and the wife can handle them better than heavy loads

Take a look at the remington 870 YOUTH model. It is short, still has the choke, and is legal. It would make a great gun for what you are talking about. Comes in 12 or 20 ga.

once i had a stevens model 311 side by side 12 gauge and don't ask why,but like a dummy i sold it to my neighbor. now i wish i had it back. i bought a new rossi side by side 20 gauge hammer shotgun and it is really great. lightweight and small and not much recoil. both guns are really good for varmits at close range.

In addition to destroying whatever value your gun may have you will remove the chokes, making it useless beyond a few feet. No doubt there are gunsmiths who could shorten the barrels properly and restore the chokes, but it would be a lot cheaper and easier to buy what you want.

Bad advise,I bought a new NEF 20 ga,20 inch barrel, modified choke for 88.00 tax included. The NEF has a hand cock action that makes it much safer that a double that is cocked when loaded. My uncle gave my son a Stevens 311 and an Ithaca double 40 years ago.I would insult his memory and his love for firearms if I cut them.I see the 311 selling for 400.00 at gun shows and the Ithaca selling for twice that amount. There are plenty of pump shotguns that will fit your needs for under 200.00.A sawed off double is a cop magnet..

Don't cut the 311. You can get a used Mossberg 12 or 20 ga pump for $100.00-150.00 most places. A bolt action shotgun or single barrel will be even cheaper.

>Most home invasions are over before you could
>get out of bed without a barking dog..

I suspect I'd be woken up by the scream of the perpetrator, and I would turn the light on to see Jake having latched onto his crotch :) He's darn quiet, but VERY protective of me.
