We're still haying!

Can't believe it, made 20+ more round bales up here in NY's St Lawrence Valley yesterday. Been tough to make any dry hay this year but now we're finally getting some weather. Everybody is hunting for hay and I had little to spare. Now I have a little more and can sell some. Rest of the week is supposed to be nice so I'll knock down some more. The tedder makes this possible, but I have a Kuhn rotary and the H+S/Grimm type works better IMO. Still, it works.

What turn in the weather, appeared to be a wash out in June/July, but the pattern finally changed in early August to what we had last year, long periods of sunny and dry weather.

If you were able to get the 1st cut off the field, regardless of the quality, that 2nd cut around here was beautiful and the weather was in your favor, I helped the neighbor put up quite a bit of 2nd cut round bales, really impressive quality. The only problem was that with so much hay to still get in and make use of the weather, was that sileage operations were starting up, so that becomes a conflict, always something.

Looks like the dry weather is here for the week, though it's cooled off a bit, hopefully the extra time with dry weather will help dry the hay enough to bale. ALso ought to help with the grain moisture on the corn if it continues and finally those fields will have dried out, we were making ruts and tearing up turf in early august, had to use care when loading the bales, and where you drove the equipment.

We put up 100 bales yesterday here in Va... weather was beautiful for it. Looks like it will all be rounds from here on out though

I finally got my IHC 46 baler back together with the new (used) part and took it out to test it. The orchard where I broke it was not to good as it was never baled and was quite wet. But the broken bales in the hay filed ,that never got re-baled do to the break down, were quite nice and baled up looking very good. Anyway the cows liked them.
It feels good to get your equipment working again after a major break down. Now to split that Kubota to get that tine little keeper on the PTO shaft out so I can get it working agian.

PS got to take the Big Case LA out with the new trailer to pick up the bales, Nice old tractor with a great sound. Needs power steering though.

After reading the posts about still haying, My mind went back 50 years when Dad was raising hay. I sure hated it back then, but would jump at the chance to do it agan. Dad is gone, hay fields are houses people everywhere roads are full of cars. I guess those were the good old days. stan

Up here in the north it gets tough to make hay after mid sept. The longer colder nights mean more dew on the hay that doesn't burn off till near noon. Then it starts to go the other way earlier in the afternoon and so the window just shrinks. It takes good sunny breezy days and maybe some preservative.

Dad and I got 27 rounds yesterday in Pa. Been dry enough to go dry with it but I wrapped it high moisture. Pretty fine second cutting grass. Would have made some high dollar dry hay, but I need the feed...

My son is helping the farm up the street with haying. Still making hay here in western ny,from the weather reports looks like we may get at least one more week.Got a few fields that are still first cutting, should be interesting how they turn out

I have about 150 on the ground but it's not quite ready to bale. Wouldn't you know, I just came for supper and it's raining.

i made 230 small square bales of third cutting grass yesterday. like you say, it took most of the summer to finally get some decent stretches of weather.

yeah me too but in a different form. i'm working on chopping 3rd crop and mixing it with the corn silage. makes good hight protein feed for dairy cows. dad is still working on 2nd crop but now i'm taking care of that for him for health reasons. otherwise most other farmers just have 2 cuttings. saves time i guess

Trying to here also. My JD 1380 MO-CO is junk, went to auction week ago Saturday, bought Gehl MO-CO also junk. Bought the NH479 I should have got B4 I went to auction, but auction was closer and didn't think would need to loose a day of work. The 479 is 100 percent except looks. Got big problems now, Ford 5000 row crop blew a steering line or pump yesterday with no prior issues. Hooked up to 1370 Case today, has had steering pump leaking for last 6 months, my repair shop said not to worry about it until they have time this winter. IT BLEW, no steering at all. I have a tractor I can borrow, but it is down also. DOUG
