Unable to get unit to charge. Wiring harness has been altered. I am looking for the correct size wiring going to the voltage regulator and the wiring from the regulator to the alternator. these wire have been reduced to 14 guage wire. Voltage regulator has been installed instead of breakout switch and new light switch has been install. PROBLEM: every time you start the tracor to get it to charge you have to jump the terminals on the generator and the tractor will continue to charge. When you shut off the unit the points in the voltage regulator will not open unless you disconnect the ground. Need some help. Thank You

Jeff, youre kinda mixin the terms Generator and Alternator, which do you have. On Generators I usually run 12 gauge from the BAT ternminal on the VR up to the amp gauge and from ARM/GEN on the VR to the gennys ARM post. On alternators I run 10 gauge from the Alternators output stud up to the ammeter.

I am attaching a URL Link to my non charging troubleshooting procedure, pay attention for what system you have, be it a Low/High charge light switch and 2 wire Cutout Relay or a full fledged Voltage Regulator and Para 5 tells easily how to see if non charging is more of a Genny versus a VR problem.

Thank You John T for your response. I do have a generator. I also have a positive ground system and this is on a model ca allis chalmer. Would you have any insight on how to convert this to a negetive ground system and does this create any changes to the information you have already sent me. Thank You

I dont really see any need to convert away from Positive ground UNLESS you get wild n change to an alternator, most of which require neg ground. To change polarity you change the battery then BEFORE you start it POLARIZE THE GENNY (instructions in my troubleshooting procedure),,,,,,,,swap any ammeter leads or else it read bass ackwards,,,,,,,,,,,,,if its a coil ignition swap its leads also i.e. for Neg ground the + gets ignition switch voltage while its other lil - wires to distributor. If a mag nothing required

My procedure covers BOTH the light switch low high charge with a cutout relay and full fledged Voltage Regulators

John T, thank you for your help. I looked at your troubleshooting breakdown and when I attempt to motor test the generator, I have removed the belt, I have retightened the hold down bolts,I have grounded the field terminal. When I applied battery power to the ARM post the generator will spin in a clockwise direction. As soon as I remove the ground from the field post the generator stops spinning. I ran an additional ground wire to the generator case thinking it was not properly grounded but nothig changed. GOT ANY IDEAS, Thank You
