What the heck is wrong w/ this thing now?

I was out clipping pasture with my 4020D and all of a sudden it developed a hard knock about the middle of the block and smoking white out of the stack. I shut it down pretty quick. IT would run, but it ain"t good. I"m gonna tear into it when it cools down. What do you think I"m looking at here?

Several possibilities ranging from serious to catastrophic, but you knew that.

Least serious is a blown head gasket but knocking is unusual with a blown head gasket.

You could have a bad/blown out injector putting too much fuel into one cylinder. A problem in the injector pump could do the same thing.

A broken piston could do that. A rod bearing would knock with no white smoke.

There are other possibilities as well.

The white smoke kind of sounds like an injector. The knock kind of sounds like a valve or broken piston or rod bearing.Might be the head if it has a copper liner around the injector that maybe cracked. Not sure if a 4020 has a copper liner around the injector, but I dont think that by itsslef would necessarily make it knock, maybe it could.Im not a John Deere mechanic anyway, somebody probably will know.A knock is usually not good on a diesel.

Could have popped the top off a piston, did that on a GM once.was driveable.. The smoke is probably unburnt fuel.

I took the valve cover off of the beast this morning and surprised to find all of the valves were where they were supposed to be. I called an old Deere mechanic to get his take on the situation. He told me to bump the starter and see wht happened. The tractor now appears to be locked up. I noticed after bumping the starter that water/antifreeze was coming from the exhaust. I alos noticed what appeared to be water and oil mixter in the top of the valve cover. There appeared to be no water in the oil on the dip stick. I am probably going to seel this thing as is. It has a loader and canopy. It has good tires all around with less than 100 hrs on a new clutch, batteries, and injector pump. I also have a set of duals to go with it. This engine only had about 400 hrs on it so I am singing the blues right now. Some of you guys give me an approximate value of what I should price this thing at. You won't hurt my feelings, I just don't have time to work on it. Hope you all have a good weekend.
