seems the bottom fell out of the scrap business. do not see the ads wanting stuff anymore.
known I should of sped up to get it gone.

The guy that picks up scrap here at my shop told me it was down . He said it was because china quit smelting during the olympics to try and clean up the air . Now they were backed up with scrap. I'm not sure if thats true or not ,but sounds good . I'm sure they'll be buying more soon .

I took a load in 2 weeks ago, only about 3 tons, un-prepared/not cut up. I expected the "usual" $170-$200 per ton I got 6 months ago and when they had already unloaded me I got a check for $100 ton (would have been $130 "prepared"). I guess I should have asked BEFORE I had them unload me. Regardless, I thought I was getting scammed so I called 2 other yards within an hour of me and same price. I guess I will have time to cut up the rest of the stuff because I am not hauling anymore until the price goes up.

I read recently where in China with High energy costs, high labor costs and high shipping costs factories are shutting down and equipment is being scrapped. They have their own supply of scrap metal there now so they don't need ours.

I was quite shocked today, I bought a 600 gallon stainless tank from my boss at work. He told me 'scrap price', so I called the company that usually buys scrap from us at work expecting $.70 or $.80 per pound (I got $1.00 a pound in May for 900 pounds of stainless out of my fab shop). The guy told me that they are paying $.35 per pound and $.50 per pound if it's prepared. Short steel was $.07 per pound.
Glad I sold in May and bought in September.

Yeah, same here in WNY. I have a field next to me that used to be an old quarry that is filled with misc scrap steel. I got permission from the current owner to go back there and "clean it up" for him. I have been scrapping since about last March. I have been getting to know my local scrap processor very well and he tells me what to expect as far as scrap prices go. Last load I took in was at the end of August, he said that prices were dropping in September, but would go back up around October. So, I have taken a small vacation from my scrapping operation until October sometime. It's nice to get a breather anyhow!

I'm really glad to hear the price dropped myself because the thieving was getting out of hand. It had gotten to the point where nothing made of any kind of metal was safe. The cost nationwide of replacing all the metal that was stolen must be in the millions.
