4DLT tractor battery Ford 5000 row crop.

This battery was new in Nov 05, was OK before all the rain and all the rain soaked wiring. I suspect the rain caused something to ground, after all water is a great electrical conducter. Not uncommon for it to be a little low after setting, but not stone cold dead. Charger is charging 45 amps right now on the 20 amp side, buries the needle on the boost side. I think it is toast, but would it do any good to let it charge for a while or should I just throw a car battery in just to get going and pick up a anew tractor battery next time I am in town? 3 years has got to be almost it is dependable for anyhow going into winter. I had a 4DLT that only lasted 364 days in my 3600.
Warranty was out. I bought a auto battery from Walmart about a year and half ago. It is still going strong and it is much easier to handle than the 4DLT and the warranty is much better.

The battery I put in to fire it back up is rated at 860 CCA 0 degrees, 1020 at 32 degrees. 4DLT rated at 890 0 degrees, 1100 32 degrees. Not much difference on cold crank, but reserve capacity is lots higher on the 4DLT, meaning how long it will spin the starter or run without a charge. DOUG

We ran a 6610 for a couple weeks on an interstate 600 amp battery (it came out of a small toyota or something, almost a quarter of the size of the 4dtl. It ran just fine during that little bit of time until we got all the chain harrowing caught up with. This was during the summer/spring, so it fired up on the first crank. As long as this tractor fires up quickly and you keep it plugged up you should be fine. I ran an Allis Chalmers 7000 on an 800 amp car battery for a while in the winter. This is a tractor designed for 1800 amps cold (2 group 31 batteries in parallel). It was a little slow, but as long as I kept it plugged up or it didn't get below 50 degrees I was good. You might want to find that short. And water itself isn't a good conductor. Water that has solutes dissolved in it is a good conductor. Distilled water won't actually conduct and electricity at all. You should get 3 completely trouble free years out of one of those batteries. For a new one, I recommend Sam's Club if you have one around you. They were by far the least expensive and they carry energizer auto/industrial batteries, which for me have held up just as well as the NH or Carquest batteries.
