walker and sts combines

Both are good machines, operating side by side , their is not much difference, the walker may clean small grain ,wheat a little better, the big difference in our area, a lot of farmer bale and sell wheat straw, most buyers do not want straw from a rotor machine, green or any other color, its grinds the straw a lot more with a rotor.

I think you can take wet grain better with roter. Last year neighbor had to take some beans early with his jd roter as they were going to start digging for a new church. I could not believe how green those plants were and he did a nice job of combining. No way could I been able to do that with my canventional.

Both machines are very reliable, do a great job - if set properly, and have top resale value. Deere had been experimenting with the rotary concept since the 1940's, but the concave/rasp bar machines seemed to work better under a variety of conditions. The drawback was limited capacity in the walker area. With the new round-up beans and bt corn, the stalks grew to be thick, strong, and more of a crop mat then the walker could handle for final cleaning. So, they had to go forward with the rotary and it has proved to be a big hit with farmers, so much so , that I believe Deere has now discontinued production of walker machines.

IT seems that most newer JD combines around here are STS. I personally like straw from a rotary machine. I really enjoy not have to tear bales apart. Takes half the time to bed and the straw last longer
