Ford tractor runs hot

Temp. gage on Ford 4000, 4 cyl. gas runs up to "hot" during summer weather. Has new radiator, waterpump, & thermostat. Radiator screen is clear. Seems to run cooler as weather gets colder. Proof meter has 3300 hrs. Any ideas for a fix?

Air fuel mix too lean, but you would have burned a valve by now.

Fan belt slipping.

Ignition timing too late; advance to spec.

Restricted exhaust, would be obvious.

You ought to be able to work the snot outta that engine in hot weather and not hit the red.

Not to be a smart $%#^ but... did you try a new temp gauge? How is the ignition timing? If the timing is too far advanced or the point gap is not set right, it will run hot.

Lumpy, The temp. gage seems to be OK but is worth a check. Will look at timing and point gap. Thanks for help. EB

check the advamce weights in the distributor to see if they are frozen. you should be able to turn the rotor a little and it should snap back into place. i had this problem wth a minnie moline. tractor would run hot under load, exhaust would glow. richened the mix up as far as i could, then one of the guys here suggested checking the advance. it was froze up and the timing was running way retarded.

John in La,
Had not noticed, but now that you mention it, I don't think there is a shroud. Could be the problem. I'll check. EB

glennster, advance weights are worth a check. Tract or hs been in a barn and not run much in last 15 yrs. Thanks for suggestion. EB

Lugging an engine is one of the bigest problems I have encountered with tractors overheating. When working under load, your r.p.m.s should not drop over 200 or so r.p.m.s. Does the tach. work?
If this is not the case, I would use one of the two part block cleaners available at most parts stores. You will be surprised at the accumilated gunk that is removed. Follow the directions carefully. Prestone works as well as soapy water.

parisspringstom,
Thanks for the suggestion. It may be the best option. Other suggestions have already been tried with no improvement. EB

Tractor, tractor
Thanks for the reminder. I'm new to this method of trouble shooting and appreciate the suggestion.
Will post the answer when I find it. EB
