OT/B in BMW

Here's a question for a rainy day. At a wedding reception, this question came up. Nobody seemed to know the answer. As in BMW automobiles, what does the B stand for? It was a concensus the the MW stands for motor works. Or was that wrong?

WIKI Says...

Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (info) (BMW), (English: Bavarian Motor Works) is an independent German automobile manufacturer founded in 1916. BMW is a worldwide manufacturer of high-performance and luxury automobiles and motorcycles, and is the current parent company of both the MINI and Rolls-Royce car brands.

Impress your friends further:

What does the blue & black in the logo symbolize?

Answer: A spinning aircraft propeller. They made aircraft engines for Luftwaffe and still have activity in aircraft engines today.

Yes: My boy had a college friend who's father was a BMW dealer. He had gotten a good deal on a used one. Nice car!.

Bavarian. If they craft vehicles as skillfully as they brew beir, they must truly be world class.

How about Big Maine Women. That's what they call them from Aroostock County. So I am told.

I live about a hundred miles north of where they used to be made. Gotta say that I like the bier better than the cars (good cars, just personal taste). About 120 miles south of where VW's are made. Northern cars and southern bier is the way to go.

Bavarian Motor Works.

They used to make good motorcycles, but IMHO their cars are overrated. Motor Trend, or one of the major auto magazines, even had an article to that effect recently.

Can't believe no one mentioned the little Isetta, the car that suposedly saved BMW back in the 50's. Word is there is a new Isetta in the planning.

Urkel had one on family matters. Why do people answer a question with only one answer, when they don't know the answer? BMW was never based in Britain. Dave

Extremely fine cars. I bought a new 325IX (AWD) for my wife in 1991 and she has never looked back (literally). A practically trouble free car in all respects. Only 220k on it though so time will tell. Smooothest running straight six I've ever listened to. I took it in one time and told them it needed front tires balanced as it had a slight shimmy that came in at about 95 mph but then straightened itself out fine at about 105. They thought I was kidding. My son has a pretty new 325XI (also AWD) and that car is even better. No question as to what kind my wife will want the next time but that might be a long way off.

My sister bought a new bmw in 2005.It's an suv type, nothing but trouble. It stops running sometimes and won't start. She has had it towed twice and they can't fix it,can't find the problem. It needed new brakes at 20000 miles. She's trying to trade it off now,but nobody wants it.

Here's a related question...
every rube knows that a BMW Isetta only had 3 wheels...but how many doors did it have? And where was the steering wheel?

actually, those lil Morgans only had 3 wheels...I guess THIS rube mis-spoke...but the other questions are good ones...anyone know?

It's just been misting. I chopped up until about an hour ago. Just starting to get to greasy. We had 3.8 a week ago. That kept some choppers out of the field earlier in the week. They say the bulk of this could be south of us for the weekend. For the first time all summer,I hope so.

OK,thanks guys. So foghorn came up with what one guy suggested. I said Bavarian, but he said he thought it was something like "bearschweizen" or something like that. That explains where he got that one.

While stationed at Sullivan Barracks in Mannheim/Kaefertal in 1956, a valet at the NCO club parked an Isetta nose to a wall. Course he couldn't get out because the door opens outward and he couldn't find reverse in that odd little machine. So he just sat there until the owner came looking for it.

I've been driving old BMW 3-series cars for commuting for many years. I always wanted an all wheel drive model, but the iX models are hard to come by and the xi models are way out of my price range.

Here's my list and the ODO reading when I junked them out and cause of death:

1984 318i - 301K (transmisison)

1984 325e - 310K (rear end)

1988 325e - unknown, at least 300K (all rubber bushings in front suspension wore out)

1992 318i - 240K (still going)

I've never had one spec of engine troubles with any of them. A fuel pump here and some new brakes there is about it.

My friends all give me crap about being an elitist snob for driving German cars, but I spend a lot less then they do in the long run. Plus they're pretty fun to drive and get good mileage.

The US made SUVs have not been anywhere near as reliable as the German made. I was expecting them to get better after a while but maybe that's not going to happen.

hmmm... it looks like there is room for my coon dog behind the seat, i saw a movie once years ago with one of these in it a nerd was driving it, but i dont remember the name of the movie, seemed like it was one of those teen type movies, i just remember the whole front of the car was the door

I seriously dont understand the fasination with BMWs. We think of them as high class luxury cars, but in other countries they are taxis. On my old job we sold some packaging supplies to one of their vendars for the SC plant.

Neat looking cars, but a little overated IMO also. I drive VW's because they seem to be easier to work on and parts are readily available (I'm in Germany) and cheaper than Mercedes and BMW. Gas mileage seems to be better also. I'm looking out the window now at a "92 BMW 325I that looks real good for $600 OBO. A Comparable VW (Passat is close) will go for 2 or 3 times that at least because of parts and service price. I put 2000 hard miles on a car each month T&F work so buy VW's for cheap and drive them til a repair costs more than another car Most I've had to do to one was a head gasket a couple of times and brakes. Hard to say that for the more popular ones. Taxi's here are Mercedes with a few BMW's and Audi's.

It's funny what different circles we run in - in this circumstance, I knew what the BMW acronym stood for when I was 12; then again, I finally learned what PTO stood for when I was about 27 or so...
