All I have been hearing the last few days is we need a new car. We went looking yestereday at the new Ford Edge. Wow they want over 30k for the thing. I just hate to get in the little room and get pressured to buy now, I don't work that way. Every 5 min the price gets a little lower, Why don't they just give me the low price to start with? Going again tonight, Wish me luck Stan

Consider an Impala. I have one with a 3.9 V6, has the V3/V6 deal, gets great mileage. Plus GM has employee pricing now, probably can get a bargain. Plus, the Impala gets better mileage than the Malibu, and very close to the HHR. I like mine.

My inlaws bought a Kia Sedona and it is a good riding suv that will be made in Ga. soon so I guess that will help the Ga. work force even if it is a Korean based company. not nearly as exspensive as the Edge

I have a 2005.5 Jetta TDI 5spd. I love the thing. Even with the 235 rubber (came with 205s) and sticky performance tires, I still get 40 city and 42-45 highway. With the original tires, I was getting 42-45 city and 45-47 highway going 70-75 mph. I love the car. It has a lot of torque, the interior is great, it handles like a dream, and it is A DIESEL! lol. The new common rail TDIs are selling pretty high right now and are hard to find, but there are some good used ones around. If you are looking at a used one that is 2004 or newer, make sure it has only seen 505.01, 506.01, or 507.00 all of its life, otherwise you could be looking at some cam issues (about a $700-1000 in parts repair if I remember correctly).

Just bought the mrs a KiaRio to drive to and from work. 35+mpg, rides decent for so small of a car, good warranty, seems to be a decent car, and it was C.H.E.A.P.

I have had Chevy Impalas since they came out but my next one will be a Volkswagen Jetta. What a nice Car.Smaller than the Impala but around 40 Miles per gallon,Stylish and easy to handle and trails a Motorhome very nicely.Yeah I know it is a German product but ,hey in the beginning my Surname Family was Hermann.5th Great Grand Dad and family came to America in 1733 and they spoke German till the early years of the 19th Century. We have had a lot of Bugs when the Kids were all in school and Son has a Golf Diesel gets 50-55 Mies per gallon now.JC

2008 Honda Accord.

It has come a longgggg way from those '80s boxy honda nerd cars.

Honda engines set the industry standard. Cab't beat the looks, either.

I won't own another Ford, Dodge, or Chevy car. They're so gross looking and unappealing.

Hope ypu have better luck than wife"s girlfriend has had with her Kia Spectra. Car is nothing but junk!

My oldest daughter has a Sorento w/ 88,000 mi and zero roblems. 2 neighbors w/ Rio's. 50,000+ and 40,000+ w/ no issues. Consumer Reports rates Rio as "best buy". I'm sure there's an occasional bad one, but over-all they seem to carry as good of a rep as any of the "cheap-o" cars and are a lot less $$$$$$.

Wife's happy, so I'm happy.

Don't worry about going "into the little room to get pressured to buy now."

I did all the negotiating for my last new car purchase over the internet. Found all the dealers in a 50 mile radius from my house who had the car I wanted. E-mailed them all (I think it was like 7 differnt dealers). 6 of them gave me some "Come on down, lets make a deal" kind of replys. But one was willing to work the deal all over e-mail. Got the price, financing, and everything worked out.

Walked in the next day, filled out the paperwork, and drove it home.

Don't play the dealers game, make them play YOUR game if they want your business.

I bought my wife a Toyota Avalon a couple of years ago....Zero problems to date...Built like a brick backhouse....

Looking at your subject headline:

How the heck do you get more than one wife to share the same car? I'd think that would just cause no end of problems for you.

We just got a Rav 4, like it, sure you will be happy with whatever you get. I know what you mean, I just hate the haggling. Some folks love it. Me, I like auctions for farm stuff. Sell tot he highest bidder.

Tell her your waiting for the 50 mpg European diesel version to come to America. They never will but don't tell her that. In the mean time buy a 3 year old car for half the price.

EXACTLY a week ago I posted about hitting a deer while the wife was driving her Corolla. She also was wanting a new car, I was with her when the deer was hit, no chance at all to miss or stop. She was wanting rid of her/our 2000 Kia Sportage, as it has been nothing but trouble. She wishes it would have been the Kia instead of the Corolla totaled, but she ended up getting what she has been complaining for, a Chevy HHR. Traded the Kia in on the HHR, 06 HHR with 34236 miles, meaning still under factory warranty, no codes pending, took the code reader with me, Carfax is clean, was rental fleet. Anyhow, I found it on Craigslist St Louis for $9990, books at $11750 to $12500. NADA, KBB, Edmunds never agree. Ended up dumping the Kia with over 100k, total out of pocket 7990 before all the money the state will get. Moral of story, don't buy NEW, 2 or 3 year old better bet. ALSO, seems like the wife ALWAYS seems to end up getting her way somehow. DOUG

Just remember there is a lotta flooding and hurricanes going on. So beware don"t get a flood damaged car.

Thier engines may set the industry standard, but the freight company I work for hauls a trailer load of bad transmissions back to the factory every day. Last honda car I had was a '78, they've probably gotten better since then. My '78 honda cb750f and my '87 trx250x seem to be bulletproof however.

Well here it is about 6 hours later. Wife has her new car, and I am broke. I thought our old donkey was stubborn, My wife wouldn't budge off of the new car, and I didn't want to start sleeping the barn. We bought a new Ford Edge. Traded in my 99 GMC sufari van. This will probably be our last new car. Tomorrow it will be back to looking at another mowing job. Stan

What? Certified preowned are used. They are usually not more than a few years old with low miles and come with some kind of warrantee because the dealer has supposedly gone right through them and fixed anything that needed it. It's also highly likely that it's just a gimmick to jack the price higher than if you fixed it yourself. Dave

The early Sportage's were junk! That's why they quit making them altogether for a year or 2. I know some people that bought an early Sportage limited completely loaded. The transfer case locked up at 50 mph! It had less then 40,000 kms. on it. The dealer said they must have let the fluid level get low. It was still on warrantee and the dealer was hassling them when they could have been killed! After setting the dealer straight, they traded it in on one of the newer Sportages. They had much better reviews but the only reason they went with another Kia is because no other dealer would give them anything for the old one. They like the new one a lot better and haven't had any major problems with it. The dealer has also apparently smartened up and tries to keep its customers happy. Dave

Chief,
I am retired from Ford if you e-mail me I can give you an x plan pin number. You will be ale to buy a new Ford at about 2% above the dealer cost.I will need some info from you to generate a pin number.Let me know.

Great car with 3.5 liter engine and the joint venture 6 speed trans. Did she get the big glass top sun roof? What tires did she get, Hankook or Continental?

Darn it ! TYPO-- I meant they want as much as NEW cars and I have even seen dealers asking more than list price for some used cars.

Well, what I meant was, if you don't look at plain old used cars, look at certified pre-owned, and if certified pre-owned cost too much, look at plain old used.

Wives always get their way? Hmmmm. I"d like some phone numbers, please. I need some extensive instruction from your wives. LOL

We never buy new, but the Mrs. was all excited about a 5 year old red Ford powerstroke at a local dealer a few years back. I didn't really want to put out the money (although we needed to replace the old one), so figured the most graceful way out was to make a crazy-lowball offer. Mrs. appreciates frugality, and I'm not just refusing to buy. I make the offer, guy goes to his manager (of course), comes back and accepts. No graceful way out now, but at least we got a good deal. Still have the truck, it has been a good 'un.

Let's not play innocent now..........

When I was in sales, one of the first things I learned was if you're dealing with a couple, you'd better get on the good side of the female half, 'cause she's going to influence him a lot more than he will her.

I see it still holds true.

She got the glass top. The way I see this, is good place for a leak. It came with 18 in Michelin tires. stan

I don't know if I could fit into any car (6'4"). Can't give much advice on the wife getting a new car (I'm not married). I know I get a laugh out of these new crossover vehicles with 25 and 30 mph, like thats good or something. Got a 2000 Dodge Caravan here that gets 20 to 22. If ever in need of cargo get a minivan and take one or both back seats out of it. Won't be so mini anymore. Sits higher than a car and doesn't hog the road like a truck.

We're only creatures that'll do anything for nookie. Be thankful she's not partial to pet horses. They suck money forever and ever and there's no off switch.
