Transmission Options

Am picking up my "new toy", okay...60 year old toy this Sat & was wondering about the transmission options that were on the 8N.
This one I am told is a 48..we will see once I clean the SN off. Anyhow, it has the "hi-low" option. Just curious, is this the Sherman tranny I have read about or....???
Sorry, do not have my manuals yet & am dumb as to what was "normal" on these ole girls.
Thanks for any input. Rob

Yep , it"s a Sherman..They were dealer installed options..The 8-N"s were straight 4 speeds without the Sherman...It"s mounted to the front of the main transmission in place of the factory "snout"..Only downside is PTO also runs at slow speed when running in low range..You gotta really "hone her out" to get mower up to speed...

Hey, thanks guys, that answers the questions I had.
That link with the pics shows that mine is the Sherman. Lever is on the left hand side as shown in that link.
And re: "honing it with a mower" on the pto, I wont be using that so thats okay. Its got a blade & that will be its job for us.
This is a great forum for us newbies!!
Thanks again! Rob

I don't think it adds a heck of a lot to the value but it sure makes the tractor a lot faster going down the highway. I have a 9n with the sherman overdrive and I love it. Goes 17 mph down the road. You also have a faster pto to run a sprayer pump faster of if you want to run your brushog at supersonic speeds. I never do but you could. It is a nice option to have on the tractor.

There are some that without the Sherman would pass on tractor and not buy because without it for some jobs it is the only way to get the groung speed you need without over reving the engine all the time. I have a 2N that as soon as they became avaible Dad had it installed. Also have a 9N with the Sherman, both are just the overdrive version as the over-under was not yet made when these were installed. In the 3 speed it gave the better speed for the grain drill and corn planter or hay rake. With the rear blade I use 2nd over and idle down. With the 4 speed 8N it is not as critacal to have as with the 3 speed on the 9-2 N tractors as 3rd in the 8N is about the same as 2nd over is in a 3 speed. But with them you will save engine wear and gas if properly used.
