Disposing of CaCl

I pulled a bad rim and tire off my project tractor this weekend - 14.9 X 38. It was loaded. The replacement tire and the good one still on the tractor are not loaded. I would like to just dump the fluid and break down the tire and rim. Tire for a planter or something, the rim for a burn pit.

How toxic is the fluid? How careful do I have to be with dumping it?

Thanks,

Tim

Seems like what little you have is a drop-in-the-bucket compared to what the State of New York drops all over the roads all winter to rot our cars and trucks out and kill the hard maples. And, many towns spread it in the summer on dirt roads for dust control.

It's pretty much like salt water. If you have weeds growing in a gravel drive it works well for keeping them down. I've heard it also works for dust control on gravel roads.

I forgot about a real bad leak in a farmall h tire. next day, all fluid leaked out onto a pine tree. It died within hours.

Thanks guys for the replies. Gotta agree with the comment about NYS DOT. There is a state barn just below my house - those guys are out as soon as the first flake hits the ground.

Something else to consider: CaCl will rust tools worse than anything else that I have ever seen. I would suggest carefully washing any tools that might have come in contact with the solution. It also is pretty hard to get off of a concrete floor, and can make a floor very slippery.

But CaCl is a great weed (or any other plant) killer. If you spread it out on an area, you should not have any problems with anything growing there for a while.

I don't know about using the tire for a planter if it has been contaminated. You may need to spend some time cleaning it up first. Good luck!

Don't dump it in your driveway, it'll forever melt the snow in that one place, and leave a soft spot to get stuck in!
