JD 50 PTO housing

Ok...gonna be sorry I ask, but need to know.
I decided to clean up a 50 JD I bought awhile back. Had heavy grease on the back.
When I hit it with the pressure washer, I see the IPTO housing to the left of the PTO shaft has been welded years ago.Good job of brazing, but I have no idea what broke it, who fixed it or how strong it is.
What could cause a cover to break there? Is there something inside that can go bad and do it.
Should I start looking for another housing?
Ok to pull a grain wagon with or feed stock, but it has me concerned.
Do I dare put a mower behind it?
Thanks for your help.

You can run it like that, but might want to start looking for a cover. They broke this cover either by backing the tractor fast into a projecting implement tongue or by an exploded bearing inside.

There is a bearing in there that can cause dammage like that? Grief.
Was this a weak point? I know if you turn too short with a pto implement you can tear things up, but this one is on the left side of the housing.
Guess I will just use it to rake hay and pull wagons.
