Case skid steer

What type of fluid is used in the hydrolics on a Case 1845C skid steer? Went over to the father in laws place to do some cleaning and the Case was low on fluid-FIL says he has plenty of hydrolic fluid but the sticker next to the fill spout say to use SAE10w-30 w/some kind of additive. FIL insisted that standard hydrolic fluid should be used. I'm under the impression that regular moter oil should be used. Who's right?

The problem is that right now you really have no idea what's in it - there probably isn't 10-30 oil in it now. Those two oils are not compatible with one another, don't really mix. The only way to tell for sure what's in it is to drain it out. If it's a high hour leaky machine, I'd just dump hydraulic oil in it. Even if it was a low hour machine, I would change out the 10-30 oil to hydraulic oil with new filters.

Rob, Won't running regular hydrolic fluid prematurly wear the hydrostat motors? The machine doesn't have a ton of hours on it and doesn't have any leaks exept for a diesal leak from somewhere-will leave a good spot if let to sit. What would cause this?

It is highly likely that it does have 10-30 in it. Especially if it has a factory sticker that says 10-30 oil. Not many people change their hydraulic oil, unless they have a major repair. Also 10-30 is very common in lots of hydrostatic and hydraulic systems. I have a Thomas skid steer and it specifies 10-30 oil for the hydraulics. One of the reasons for 10-30 is so you can use a common oil for everything. My machine specifies 10-30 for hyd., chain case and engine, although I run 15-40 in the engine. I have run 10-30 diesel oil in the winter for a little easier starting. I'm not sure what happens if hydraulic oil and motor oil are mixed. I think they're both petroleum based so you wouldn't think it would be that serious. I could be wrong though. Some people use ATF for hydraulic fluid with excellent results. Same viscosity in all temperatures. Dave

Add 10w-30 oil in it. My dealer told me that as long as you are topping it off here and there you do not need the additive unless you completely drain the oil or if you have added over 4 qts in the here and there top off.

I asked about adding regular hydraulic oil. He just smiled and said let me know when you decide to add that, so i can let the shop guys know the skid loader is coming in for a hydraulic pump rebuild.

I have never used motor oil in the hydraulic system on anything. However if it is going into a hydrostatic system I do buy the best grade of hyd. oil available. Tractor hydraulic/ transmission grade has always served me well.

Use only 10/30 or you will mess up the pump. I went through this already with my Case 1825. You will not need the special addditive if you are only topping it off. Rich

DO NOT use hydraulic oil in a Case skid-steer. I have two of them (40XT and 420) and they take 10w30 motor oil in the hydraulic system.

Just curious-when the factory cap says use 10w30, the owners manual says use 10w30, and the machine comes from the factory filled with 10w30, why would you remove it and refill with hydraulic oil?

My Case 1830 uses Case Hy Tran or automatic transmission fluid, per the owners manual and the last 30 years I have owned it. So I would check your owners manual before you add the wrong fluid.

Thanks guys for the input. Even tried to tell the FIL this but he kept insisting to use hydrolic fluid, even kept showing him the sticker but he seems to get alittle confused real easily so waited and called the implement dealer, said to use the 10/30. Neighbor came by later with some from Case(he has the same machine)so all is good.
