which to restore? ford or john deere

I have a John Deere MT and a Ford 641 Workmaster. Both are in pretty good shape, but Im trying to decide which one to restore. I thought I would turn to you guys to help me decide. Thanks in advance!!!

Man oh man ; if you're having such a problem how about me coming to get the 641 & then you won't have to make such a hard decision . I love to be helpful . I would definitely restore the 641 if it were me . How about some pics ? The 641 is a great tractor . My Dad had one for awhile when I was a kid . God bless, Ken

The MT is a cute little novelty. It's easy to store and light - easy to haul. It was near-useless as a general working tractor but had a lot of specialty uses.

The Ford was a lot more useful in every way. It's bigger and heavier and there are a lot of them around. Parts are plentiful.

Take your time and do both of them.

no problem with the mt flywheel (thats the horizontal 2 cyl JD engines problem. MT and M are pretty tough to get on and off gracefully. Bill M.

The Ford is a more usefull tractor so if it is usable and you have a use for it I would restore the MT and keep the Ford for working so you don't have to worry about it getting scratched and dented.

My self I would do the JD first because the ford is a good little tractor to do lots of stuff. Then maybe the ford. But on a side note I hate the term restore because to me that means to bring it back to as good as new or better which also means major engine work. I never restore one but I do fix them up

Bengie If you want something for a parade do the jd. I put 100's of hours on one of those things and that is ALL they are good for.

In that series, after a slow start with the MT, JD did better with the 40, then finally pretty much got it right with the 420 5 speed/live PTO and 430 (435 was a diversion that wasn't much good for work, unless you were already deaf, but SOUNDS so cool). Practical utility of the MT is limited to going down to get the mail (if you don't have too much mail), but they're kind of cute, and good for parades if you don't make a fool of yourself trying to get on and off it. Guess I would go with the others- make the Ford your "usin'" tractor, and restore the JD for the "Oh, isn't that cute- and its that darling green color" crowd.

Did some hay for a guy that has a few John Deeres in his collection, he had an M or maybe it was a 40, but one look and I knew I will never own one. There is no way, NO WAY my 6'6" frame will fit on that toy. Give me the Ford any day.

Do you use either one for much work? If you are going to restore one to show quality I'd go with the one least used on a regular basis. In my opinion The Ford is a handier tractor for work, the JD may have a little more collector value.

My opinion (which we all know what they are like), is restore the JD and use the Ford as is. The Ford, in my experience, is useful way past in pretty good shape so use it until it absolutely needs it. As far as JD goes, never owned or used one but I think they look pretty neat (same way I think anything with a NF is cool).

Been using a JD H for 43 years and a Ford 640 for 22 years .The Ford is a far better tractor.I worked for a JD dealer when the MT and 40 were only a few years old.

Yes , I love my 640 . Its been a great tractor & very dependable . I also love the Sherman hi/lo . I was raised on Fords since my Dad was a Ford mechanic most of his life . He wouldn't allow any of us kids park any other brand in his driveway to embarrass him . No kidding ! I had to park a Dodge I had across the street if i went tyhere . I started driving solo at age 7 doing plowing , discing & cultivating . So I've had plenty of driving experience on these beauts . I've even got pics of me sitting on his 640 at age 7 . Go Fords . God bless, Ken
