Neighbor has 4 acres of grapes and will squeeze them out tomorrow , he wanted to know if I wanted the spent mash for my Cows or ethanol production ,,Not sure what recipe it takes to do ethanol,SoWhat if Cowsate the stuff ? .. Is there a poison that is just as bad as wilted wild cherry ? Not sure where to get answers ,, Will call Co. ext . but you guys are the best sounding Board , Thanx jim

Definitely check with the Vet. I know that grapes and raisins are poisonous to dogs, for example. Not sure about cows. Better safe than sorry.

Curious where you are at. I"m in Northern Ca; Sonoma/Napa county. Lots of wine production.

Pumice is a good supplemental feed. It is a silable material and has the same problems as any silage. If you don"t feed it out quickly, it will rot and can be a source of listerosis. I have kept it in barrels. Resealable plastic are best, though I mostly used metal. Remember, it is the air that is problematic as to the rotting of this material. Sometimes the paint in a metal can will peel from this feed, so watch that. Make sure any barrels you use had food grade material in them prior to your use. I would take this stuff in bulk here, but I do not know of a reasonable way to ensile large amounts. It is similar to feeding brewer"s waste.

Remember that any sudden change in fed, especially when fed in quantity can affect the rumen. Also note, I fed this pumice to beef cattle, not dairy. I have no idea if this could put the flavor of milk off. I suspect it might. The stems from wine production may also be fed and with less problems than feeding pumice.

I have no clue but it is interesting to read what beef cows can be fed. I once read about a guy near a plant that makes instant iced tea feeding the "spent" tea leaves and one near a candy bar factory who fed the mangled candy bars that were not suitable for sale. He must have had the happiest cows on the planet (not counting the ones drunk on grape pumice)!

Yep,when Ore-Ida had their plant near here, the neighbor fed cull french fries by the ton.

when I worked for Gehl we had a customer we tested at that put "bad" chocolate from the local choc. factory on top of his bunk silos. It would melt in the sun and seal the bunker. Just scooped the nasty stuff off the top and spread it later. Also feed choc mixed in the TMR. Opening 100"s of small bags of choc chips was a pain for feeding large herds.. it was free feed though.

Have a friend near K.C. He used to feed tea leaves he got from Lipton. Have seen cull oranges fed to dairy cows in Fla.
