Electric Clutch unplugs it self

I have a Craftsman lawn tractor with mower. model 917.272246
The problem is the electric clutch, the old one locked up and burned out. I bought a sears replacement and installed same as the old one. After connecting and starting engine and the clutch engaged it works perfect but when disengaged the clutch swivels around and pulls the power connection lose. What have I done wrong?

There should be a "stop bolt" mounted on the frame and the clutch should have a slot in it where the bolt goes when you install the clutch. The bolt fits loose in the slot.

Tom's right... I had the same thing happen to mine. Once you run that pin in the slot on the mounting bracket, it'll work just fine.

There has to be something to keep the clutch from spinning. I had the same thing happen on a John Deere. There was a slot in the clutch that a flat iron bracket slipped into. The other end bolted to the frame.

Repaired Simplicity for a neighbor a few years ago. The bracket that held the clutch from rotating had broken off, could not even see where it had been. The dealer had a kit that bolted to an engine mounting bolt to replace it. It's been working fine ever since. Maybe you can get something similar?

James, You haven't "indexed" that clutch onto the shaft right. When you get it on right it will only rotate about 20 degrees in either direction before it bottoms against a stop bracket. You are probably about 20 degrees off- see what it stops against when engaged, rotate the clutch just past that stop when disengaged, and you should be OK

No stop bolt location found ?

May have broken off pretty flat and just not either seeing it or can't feel it. always has a way to hold it from spinning in either direction.
