OT Repair Water Hydrant?

My outside water hydrant is acting up. You pull the handle up, it pulls hard like normal, but no water comes out. It started out doing this last spring. Pull the handle and get a reduced flow. Turn it off a couple of times and then get a full stream of water. Now, turn it on and off 6 or 8 times before you get any water, sometimes a full stream, and sometimes just a trickle. Has anyone ever took one apart and rebuilt the insides or are you better off to dig it up snd replace the whole works? Our water is kind of hard if that makes any difference. Thanks, Chris

Most of the time I find I have to dig them to fixem. If you allready spent the time & money to dig it why not buy a new one So hopefully you won't have to doit again for 15 or 20 more years

If it's like the ones that I have all you have to do is unscrew the top and the rod pulls out and you can replace all the parts and you're back in business, most hardware stores will have replacement parts for them.

If you have a name-brand hydrant (e.g. Woodford) you should be able to purchase repair parts and fix it without digging it up. If you have a no-name hydrant like the ones TSC sells, you probably have to send off to China for parts. In other words, if it's a good hydrant you should be able to fix it without digging it up, if it's a cheapie go ahead, dig it up and replace it with a Woodford "Iowa" hydrant.

Sometimes its just crud built up at the bottom of the hydrant and when you jiggle the handle you break it loose. I've had a couple like this one got better on its own the other one I had to dig up they say I've got manganese in my water. Lee

Where do you find one of those Iowa hydrants anymore?

Like you say all the darn stores sell the cheapies.

Here is a link, if it does not work it is woodfordmfg dot com. Jim

I bought my hydrants at a local plumbing supply house. If your local plumbing supply doesn't have them, they should be able to order them.
