little allis chalmers dozer

The other day, I was offered the chance to buy my neighbors little allis bull dozer. Im sure the model but it doesnt stand any taller than myself but he said it has not been running in six years. It is a diesel and was overhauled with only a few hours use later. The problem is...he claimed the track kept falling off when he turned. He doesnt really know much about them for it was his uncles who bought it new. Im guessing its a 40's or 50's machine. He said kinda find out the scrap value. Does anybody know what this might be? In a general ballpark area...Im planning on fixing it up a bit and putting it to work on small jobs on our farm. 500 bucks? Does that sound decent? Any help it greatly appriciated. Thanks Boys!

Would that be a HD3 with 2 cyl Detroit 2 cycle engine? Would love to have one. Think HD5 was 3 cyl detroit. My memory is as old as that tractor....Kennyp
Oh yea....Allis crawlers were like HD3=3 ton, HD5=5 ton HD14=14ton ETC.

Im guessing that would probably be a little three ton dozer than. I didnt know that! Heck I really didnt know they were only two cylinders! What other models have that engine?

Thankyou, That gives me a little better idea now of what it actually is. Generally, can you tighten the tracks up on them? Im sorry but I am not too familiar on these machines. We are just cattle ranchers here in Iowa.

Memory is old. those were the first series of screeming gimmy engines..2, 3, 4 6 cylenders etc. If If I remember same pistons and parts in all the same.
Good ol Goggle search for Allis HD3....

Have to ask a track man that..probably needs tracks rebuilt at horible price. I grew up with a cat 20.

Many things can cause a track to come off when you turn. Bad bearings in the idler will do that a track thats loose will do that etc. BTDT on a few older dozer's and yes they can be tighten up in some way or the other.

The HD5 had a 2-71 Detroit, the 3-71 was in the HD6. I have a HD5 that I am fooling around with now.

sounds like the track is loose look at it from the side and see how much sag the track has. take along straight piece of iron or board and lat on top of the track from sprocket to sprocket and measure from the bottom of the straight edge to the top of the track write that measurement down.
Now you have two large sprokets one with theeth and one that is smooth or maybe there are two toothed sprokets, any way one is the driver and one is the idler sprocket. the driver is either chain driven or has a hydraulic motor. the idlersprocket jus turns.
now still looking at it from the side find the idler sprocket there should be a plate that is held on with 2 or 4 bolts. Remove that plate and clean out the dirt and crud out of the hole
you will find a cyclinder with a grease fitting on it and maybe some shims pump that cyclinder full of grease and watch the track tighten up.
measureing the distance between the top of the track to the bottom of the straight edge .
If the guy has a maual there should be a chapter on tightening and the measurements. e-mail me if you need more help Jer

The hd3 use a 4 CYL,DIESEL ANS H3 4CYL.GAS ,THE HD5 USE A 2 CYL.DIESEL DETROIT 271 AND THE HD 6 USE A 4CYL.DIESEL ALLIS AND BUDA AND THE ERLAY HD7 USE A 3 CYL. DETROIT 371 AND THE LATER USE A 4 CYL.ALLIS CHALMERS MOTOR.

I read through the ohter posts and I'll just add it could be an HD3 or an HD4. I've got both. HD3 has the radiator in front - whereas the HD4 has radiator behind the engine by the dashboard.

Either one is worth a lot more than $500, regardless of condition.

I'm not sure but I think you're thinking of a much newer machine to have hydraulic track adjusters. A sprocket is a sprocket and an idler is an idler. If you have a smooth sprocket, it's really worn out. Track sag is usually measured from idler to carrier roller but I think some older snmall machines didn't use a carrier roller. Dave
