Just buy the Hytran fluid for the transmission and use regular oil in the engine and you should be fine.

The manual calls for 90W mineral oil which is not 90W gear oil. You can get it at Tractor Supply called Ford Tractor Hyd. Oil, New Holand and Napa should have it also. Use 30W HD in engine or 15/40W

On the fords like the 8N you need oil that is called GL-1 or ford spec 134D. Theres parts in there that if the oil does not meet ford specs can and will cause you problems. As to it not working I would pull the side plate that has the dip stick, start the tractor with the PTO in gear, you do know the 3 point only works when the PTO is spinning don't you ? The look for any movement of oil. If you see oil moving some place then you have a problem some place in the area of movement. I just did this a couple weeks ago on an 8N and found a blown gasket but since I was in to it any how I also installed the up grade NAA type cylinder piston

Water in the oil... It hasn't been used for 3 years (the hyd system). So would that lead to the possibility that the pump is corroded/frozen? A pressure check would be helpful. Also the cylinder could freeze too, correct? Just seems the answer might be more involved than just changing the oil.

why is it when the 3 point or hyd. don't work most run right out and buy and change the oil? the old fords and ferguson where made with no filter the pumps a real simple and have been running for 60+ years and will pump just about anything that is in the tractor oil, water,or a mix of both sure water is bad and yes it will wreck the pump but if your hyd. is not working it's more then the oil. the neglect for 60 + years has taken it's toll on the pump or the control linkage, or some other parts. water in the oil is real bad if you are in the cold country and it freezes it likes to brake pumps and other things in side

Use 90W GL-1 gear oil. Living in Louisana GL-1 is ideal year round as the temps are not real cold. Use GL-1, not GL-4 or GL-5..........

THANKS (OLD) FOR YOUR HELP IM SURE WE WILL TALK AGAIN HAVE AGREAT DAY AND BESAFE

You certainly don"t use 90wt or any "gear oil" in a hydraulic system.
Best to use only a trans/hydraulic oil that is wet clutch rated. That way when hydraulic equipment is swapped. Or a jug of "hydraulic oil" is grabbed and used in something. The wet brakes and clutches are not going to be ruined.

Believe it or not, Ford recommended 90wt mineral (not gear) oil in the transmission, rear end, hydraulic system of that tractor - - - in 1939! It will still work just fine but Ford subsequently recommended their 134 fluid as a replacement. Most use that although, as some have stated, TSC & NAPA have an oil that will also work fine. IMPORTANT!!!!! Don't put 5 gallons in there! 4.75 US gallons is plenty! Better yet, go over to the Ford N forum and read to your heart's delight. Those guys know a lot and many of them never bother to post on this forum. There's a good post over there right now on the 50 tips no N owner should be without. The N's are good little tractors to do what they were designed for which was to replace a team of horses on a small farm but they, like their inventor, have their little quirks. Most of them are carburetor problems that can be fixed by working on the ignition system.

Not going to comment on that one but go ahead and use 90 wt GL1. That is the mineral oil used orignally. David...........

Well, you have to admit. N's are quirky little things. It's not "if" you're going to have problems but "when". I get a lot of laughs out of reading the postings on the N board.
