ot- 92 ford f-150 dual fuel tank-

hello all, a little ot, but its a tractor hauler--ok-neighbor dropped off his pickup for me to look at--problem being when he runs on one tank,{back i think] it trys to fill front tank. he also brought a six-line frame mounted change-over valve [from fomoco] looked all over tonight, and don't find one. does this system use the electric pumps with built-in check valves to switch? i believe this system was differant in 91? thanks for any help. paul

Is there a dumb-looking plastic doohickey in the LH frame rail that looks a bit like a cartridge-type fuel filter?

If so, it's a diaphragm valve thing-a-ma-bob that switches the return to the correct tank, operated by whichever side of the diaphragm is being pushed on by fuel pressure, from one pump or the other.

They commonly fail.

Bob: Thanks-- will look in the morning, pretty sure you are right. i looked at print-out he gave me with the new valve assy- this all seems to fit earlier models--thought there must be check system in tank, or in-line. paul-

What about a 93 ford f150 that does the same thing. I dont have the dohinky in the frame rail It fills the front tank when running the rear. I know there is a problem with these years and i get the hard starting syndrome also. It has to crank a lot before it starts. but not always.

You probably ought to call your local Ford deaership and give them the VIN number, they should be able to tell you what was origionally used. I just changed the selector valve on my '87 because it was draining the rear tank into the front, even when not running. Based on what they told me, depending on engine and tank combinations, there were a couple of different ones used. Some were the mechanical type that used fuel pressure to change, and some were electric driven. They actually had the one for my truck, even as old as it is, in stock. I think it cost me something like $140.

hello--yes, he took vin # to dealer. they sold him 6-port valve that mounts on frame.[$206--] probly didn't research. I looked today & find no canister on frame rail.thanks to all--sounds like a good job for fomoco dealer to me---paul

Call your local Ford dealer, there was a recall, and due to it being a fire hazard, it might still be fixed under warranty.

Hello JT-yes, thats what i told neighbor-very possible it can be covered under recall yet. he was worried about getting full refund on the part that didn't work, but he provided vin,so should't be problem.

Ford dealer just did a fix on my 96 f150 at no charge on the cruise control.Always check with the dealer first.
