Miss MN came across this ad on craigslist for some sort of fancy JD model 50. Looks like a plain jane 50 to me except with a single front wheel which was an available option. Ad says there was only 94 of these tractors made. Would ya mind going to the ad and explaining? I don't see what makes this tractor so special.

It's a barber-greene modified 50 for use with their windrow loader. Rare? Uhh, maybe, but I don't really think there's much "rare" hype about it.

yeah i saw that same one too. like you said, no different but with a single front wheel and different rears....what people will do to get more money! also if it was an industrial wouldn't it be yellow? sorry not real up to date on classic jds

wayyy overpriced, if I might add. And look at what B&D said, it's basically a regular tractor seeing as the loader equipment was probably scrapped long ago.

how many of these tractors have you seen sell lately? Call Dennis Polk and ask how much they think they could get for it on the Labor Day auction, I bet it is worth 10 times what a run of the mill 50 is.

in too deep

The 50 portion of JR Hobbs book on the first numbered series devotes a lot of the 50 section to the barber greene version. One other thing you might notice is the rear wheels. They run 28 inch rubber. The windrower was driven off the crank and when it was in operation forward motion was driven by a drive set up that applied power from the loader to the belt pulley.

I didn't see the price either.

btw on a side note things are looking up here!!

The same seller was previously offer the wheels and serial number plate as kit to make Barber Greene 50 on craigslist.

It"s definitely NOT special. Same seller has had it listed several times on the photo ads here. As to someone"s comment that Dennis Polk could get 10 times for this compared to what a regular 50 sells for, I"ll belive that when I see it. These 50s are the ugliest 50s around. Another difference to a regular 50 is these Barber Greenes had a larger diameter 4 spoke steering wheel like the R and 70 had. They may be a special piece of history in some folks mind, but not in mine.

Very nice, unusual tractor. Certainly worth a premium, even if only for the rear wheels and tires. Two-Cylinder magazine (if I remember correctly) did a nice article on these years ago. My guess is the seller is a little too bullish on price. For me to be interested, it would need to have the loader attached to get top dollar, otherwise it is just a good story. Deere collectors probably think the same way, or it would be sold by now. No doubt about it, though, if it is original, it is among the rarer Deeres.
