Looking at replacing our early 6600 gas.Had pretty good luck with it,but previous owner didn't keep it in shed.Has 5200 hrs on it.Getting rough and worn out.

Went and looked at a couple Saturday in Wisconsin. Will be using for beans and small grain. We use a 220 flex and a belt pick-up.Might use for corn some day,but we use a newer 4400 diesel with 443 head for that,so would need a bigger head.

1st one: '72 7700 diesel with 2600 hrs.No AC,Flat screen rad,nice rubber,no holes in holding tank,clean interior,shiny paint with no major sheet metal damage.Looks to maintained nicely.Runs perfect.Owner says he will give me a rotary screen from a newer 7700.Asking $4400

2nd one: '76 6600 diesel with 3200 hrs.AC,Rotary screen,nice rubber,some patching on holding tank,interior falling down,dull paint,decent sheet metal,most chains are loose,not maintained as should have been?Has rear inner weghts on wheels.Runs perfect.Asking $4750

Both gear drives.

Will be using on about 150 acres.

What do ya guys think? Thanks for any input!

wouldn't go for either unit.high prices for those units, that can get you 6620 or more in my area. Do yourself favor step up to the 20 sereis at least and hydro tranny and you won't want to go back. the 100 series in my area bring around 2500.00 at most if that

I'd go with the 7700. Larger combine always better. Sounds like the 7700 has received better maintance to and that can really pay off with fewer repairs. Also the 7700 has fewer hours and a lower price however AC would be nice for grain harvest. Wouldn't be to hard to install AC from a doner combine tho.

I would also go on up to a twenty series. A oo series needing parts could start to be a problem. And definitely get a hydro. You will simply love it.

Sound like the others think the 20 series is the way to go. I have wondered this too as I have seen 20 series in this price range and 00 series about 1/2 that ?

My cousin bought a 6600 and had a hard time finding a radiator for it ! Had an oddball year and aftermarket didn't even offer one. So parts may be hard to find for them like the others said.

A "20" series with average of 4500 hrs. starts at $7500 in southern MN. and surrounding areas.I'd sure like to find one for around 5 grand with decent hrs.Parts aren't a problem for any JD combine here.Lots of them in yards.

I know the prices are on the high side, but the low houred older combines are hard to find.Might be the last combine I'll have to buy for years.

I think you answed your own question. 7700, less money, better condition, and more capacity, obvious choice. Hydro is nice but it isn't gonna make a bit of difference in my opinion. Nothing wrong with an older combine, just keep them maintained they will still be cutting when the new ones have their electronics ruined.
