OT Computer problems - wireless router...

Have a Linksys wireless router (WirelessB) that has worked great for five years, and still works great on our older laptop computers...

We just got new computers and the connection speed to the internet is much, much slower than the old ones. Download speed on the old computer is 2800Mbps and the new ones get 400Mbps download speed.

I get great speed if I connect to the router with a wire, it's just the wireless that is slow - and only on the new computers...

Any ideas? Do I have to go buy a new Wireless G router to work with the new computers?

Any help is appreciated!

I have a Toshiba laptop with Vista home version. It connects to the internet via a Lynksys wireless G. I have NO problems. I am on DSL with a speed of 100 mbps.

go into device management and select the network card and select properties.if it is set to auto change it to the highest speed your card does.
probably will be the highest b speed which is not much.
with direct wire you are probably hitting 10/100 speed.

Call your internet service, they probably have to reset the codes in your new computers.

Just have to ask. What kind of internet connection do you have that you get those speeds? T1 line or something? Thats 10 times my DSL.

Whoops, meant to type Kbps...

Tried all the suggestions, no luck. It is not the internet service provider as the other computers work fine, and these work fine when wired to the modem or router. It is only the wireless that is slacking...

I'll call Dell and see what some dude over in India has to say about it...

Get into Control Panel and see what the power / energy star settings may be set for. (assuming laptop is rated energy star compliant) Look to see if the wireless adapter is set to a power saving mode and kick it up to max performance.

Does this happen if the computer hits a public wi-fi signal? If not, then at least the issue is narrowed down to the linksys setup.

Dell rep says it is most likely an incompatability issue with the old trusty wireless B router. I was told to find some public internet access with wireless G to see if that would solve the problem...

Time to go for a drive, I suppose...

The protocols have been upgraded - you need to upgrade your wireless router.

Yep, went and picked up a Wireless G router and it works just fine. Wish I could have saved the $$, but that's the price you pay for new technology.

Thanks everyone for the help and suggestions!

Anyone need a wireless B router that works just fine?
