disinfecting hog equipment

I have an older hog barn on my place that hasn"t been used in about 8 years and am thinking of using it again.

Do you need to disinfect hog equipment between batches of hogs?

Is pressure washing the building, floors, feeders enough or do you need to add some kind of disinfectant? If so, what kind?

Keep in mind that birds and beasts carry in diseases and were the main reason for confining hogs and poultry in the first place. You had best disinfect since they have probably been coming and going.

Pressure wash the whole place with a disinfectant mixed in. Let the place dry out real good and then foam the barn with a disinfectant such as 401 or synergize. Then keep everyone and every thing out except the hogs

I don't know about disinfecting, but we split our 80 acre home place into five 13-acre fields (plus some smaller patches and the buildings site) back in the early '50s. This allowed us to put the hogs on "clean ground" (as Dad called it) every year and gave the other fields 4 years to get rid of whatever it was we were worried about.

It sounds awfully small these days, but we raised 400+ market hogs a year, which was a lot of work back then. We had to haul water to the fields in a 300 gallon "water wagon". One of my jobs was to count the hogs each day. They were all Poland Chinas and all looked alike. One day I reported to Dad that one of the hogs looked sick. His question was "Which one?"
