JD 70 with or without power steering?

Im looking at a JD 70 It is a good buy but it does not have power steering is this a major draw back for resale (someday) vs. one with power steering? thanks.

Probably will not make much differance. If the tractor will be a working tractor, power steering would be a plus, but if it will be a parade queen, I don't think it would matter.

I think that probably would be an early year model as I don't think the first of any of the number series had power steering, only became an option as time went on.

If money is any consideration, you are much better off WITHOUT power steering as you can easily put a thousand dollars into fixing the system.

If the steering is in good shape and you have the larger dia. 4 spoke steering wheel they don't steer that bad.

We have 3 model 70's; 2 with power steering and 1 without power steering.

The 53 does not have power steering and has the large 4 spoke steering wheel.

The larger steering wheel makes it much easier to turn.

It steers easy enough to make the turns with a hay rake.

If someone really wants to buy your tractor, power steering should not be an issue.

I agree with RustyFarmall [b:654c4848f0]"If the tractor will be a working tractor, power steering would be a plus, but if it will be a parade queen, I don't think it would matter."[/b:654c4848f0]

The 70 pictured above we call "No. 15" because it was serial number 15.

A very early numbered tractor.

Last week Nancy and I went to "inspect" a tractor about 15 miles from home.

One of the owner's other tractors was the serial number 30 model 70.

Never had any experience with a 70,but we had a 60 without. Dad had a devil of a time driving it. I bought an aftermarket powersteering unit and put it on that one. Easy to install and worked like a champ.Steered better that the factory unit on the 730.

Also depends on wide or narrow front. I've never had a problem steering any tractor with a narrow front and no power steering... wide fronts steer harder.

Have run a JD 60 wide front without PS and hated every minute of it.

Ran a JD 70 wide front with PS and could steer it with one finger - enjoyed that day!

For a parade tractor, I would prefer NOT to have PS - just more repairs and more potential leaks to mess up a nice clean tractor.

As others have said, with the large 4 spoke and narrow front, our 70 JD gasser without power steering isn"t that hard. I have driven it with no problem. Of course its not as easy at PS, but really not a problem.

As far as resale for collectors, I don"t know how it would affect the price.

I ran 70 jd all my life and the only time i missed even havin power steering is when we used to stack hay with a farm hand. But they are pricey to install unless u can find old parts from junk dealers and then i think one could cut costs on installin your own system

Back in late 1954-1956 when PS 70's were built. Power Steering was pretty much looked upon as something for old men, women, children and girly men.
