I am trying to identify my Ford 4000 that I just bought. Following is what I found for numbers following the great information I recieved earlier on this site.
There are some numbers stamped on the corner of the trans. They read as follows.
6_F_28_B
41024E
C165283 7B07
Can anyone translate these for me. I sure do appreciate all the great help and advice given on this forum.

First number is transmission unit number.

Second number is tractor model number. Dealer can help you decipher this.

Third number is serial number. In this case the tractor was built in 1967.

Not set in stone, but if I remember this is correct.

6-F-28-B Stands for; 6 is the year..In this case a "66....F stands for month of build, Which is June....28 is the day of build and B stands for shift built[ Day Shift].... I don"t have my old sales book to tell the rest of the story

Are you sure you listed the #'s as you found them. You have 2 date codes where as you should only have 1. BUT every piece (engine; trans; rear end;) will also have a seperate date code for the day it was cast; so I think you may have one of them listed.

Your 2 date codes
6F28B
1966
June 28
Day shift

7B07
1967
Feb 07

41024E is the model #
4- 4000
10- ag tractor
2- gas engine
4- Independent PTO 540 rpm
E- SOS trans

C165283 is the serial #
This is a 1967 tractor

If I'm not mistaken the transmission date code will be stamped on the same boss on the left hand side of the tractor (below the hydraulic pump) rather than the right hand side where the model, serial and unit numbers are located.
I've never seen a second unit number stamped on the right, not that it couldn't have happened...
I'd hazard a guess that this one is a '67 in keeping with the serial number.
If the other is the transmission date code, then that's one hell of a gap between the transmission assembly date and the tractor assembly date... That's close to 8 months!

Yes his numbers have me a little stumped myself. That is why I ask if he is sure he listed the numbers as he found them.

Usually the date code with the letter on the end is the tractor build date. But then I got to ask why would the tractor have a June 1966 build date and a 1967 serial #.

There is a tag under the hood with all the numbers. Engine; trans; rearend; hyd pump; manufacture date; model #; ect and this may be where he got the #'s from. If so he needs to tell us what each number is for so we can help him better.

No, those are the numbers exactly as I found them stamped into the top right of the trans housing. Interesting that there seams to be such a discrepency. I'll definitely check the numbers under the hood tomorrow first chance I get. Thanks guys.

The only thought that really crossed my mind is that this tractor may have been, for some reason, a factory reman tractor. Especially with the S-O-S. I think what they would do with those tractors was grind the original numbers off and then restamp with new numbers once the reman was done... They may have then restamped the original UNIT code in a slightly different manner to denote it's original assembly date and then a new code and serial number to denote it's final buyoff date. This is purely speculation on my part, but I do wonder...
This was basically done with the 6000 series tractors as the first many that were produced were unproven junk and they (Ford) collected most of them up for shame's sake.
