I live in central maryland. Last spring I sprayed 2 4 D in the pasture. It killed the weeds for a couple months and they came back by fall. This year I sprayed again in spring, it killed all the weeds and I had a great stand of grass (I fertilized also) Now here we are in August and the weeds are back, not as bad as before but they are there. Question is am I going to have to do this evey year and spot spray to? Or is there something else that gets farther into the roots and kills them for good. (at least for a couple years). I don't have much pasture and need every bit of grass possible. thanks

The 2,4D will do the job, but it needs to be applied more than once a year. Spray it on the spring, and then go back later and spray the weeds you missed. There will always be some seed in the ground that will sprout, but eventually you will get it down to where you only need to spot spray. Nothing is ever 100%. You will always have to fight those weeds.

IT IS SAID BY SCIENCE ---- IN THE YEARS COMING --- WEEDS WILL COME STRONGER AND BIGGER -- AND MORE HARD TO KILL ---

An aquaintance of mine who works for a herbicide company told me autumn is he most effective time to kill weeds by spraying. When the evenings get cool they are drawing food into their roots, gets the herbicide all the way down if I understand it right.

Hey Big Hunter, you say that you need every bit of pasture. What is your stocking rate? Grass grows best in the spring and your animals will love it.In fact most will eat the grass and leave the weeds to grow tall. I believe that it is an accepted fact that the best defense for weeds is healthy grass, and if it is given a chance to grow the grass will overcome the weeds on its own. You must also remember that most varieties of grass will grow much less slowly in hot dry weather.

I agree with Showcrop.

The problem isn't the weeds, it's something with the grass or the way it's being managed.

Weeds can't survive in a healthy grass environment.

My stocking rate is 1 steer on 1 1/2 acres soon to be 2 on 1 1/2 acres. Yeah I know spring is the best time to grow grass. I had a great stand...actually still does. No he didn't even begin to eat it down. The one I have now is around 1,000 to 1,200lbs. He'll be leaving in a month. Just got 2 more, they are 450lbs. each. No they won't eat the pasture down either. I have hay available for them, feed grain, I chop the sweet corn down and give it to them, give them apples and pears. Weeds still grow...from the time of Adam. Just thought I might be able to get rid of them for longer then a few months.

2 4 D alone isn't enough.Go to www.trimec.com.It's a combo of 2 4 D,MCPP,and dicamba.I used it on sod crops for years with excellent results.Another thing to remember is your killing the weed but not the seed. Some seeds can lay dorment for several years. We used to spray in the spring and then again in the fall growing season.Best time to spray in in the middle of the day when the photosynthesis of the plant is at its peak.We use 1 quart per 50 gallon and 90-110 gallon of water per acre.I don't know where your located, but in Illinois you can spray your own property without an ap licenes.Good Luck.

Why are you spraying it at all? Make them eat the weeds. Most anything you're killing with 2-4D is just as good for them as the grass.
Get into rotational intensive grazing. Give them enough for a day or two at once, make them eat it down clean and then move to another piece. That will cure your weed problem and likely promote a much more mixed stand of grasses that will thrive. More work, but not really much expense to it...
The only weed problems we have here are ragwort and thistles. The discbine takes care of them before they set seed.

QUIT giving them apples, they will KILL an animal like that, they get stuck in the throt and they cannot breath. Had calf do that, luck the vet was able to get it out before it died. After that we picked up and got rid of any and all apples in pasture that had fallen from trees. No animals life is worth feeding those apples to it. If you feel you absoutle have to feed them cut the apples into quarters so the pieces are small enough they cannot get them stuck and die because they cannot breath.

I was going to add about clipping to keep weeds from going to seed. I usually try to do it twice though, first time late June.
