I bought a grain truck with a twin cylinder double acting hoist. It lifts nice and fast but lowers really slow. I did notice that the return hose is not a hydraulic hose. It has brass fittings crimped on instead of steel hydraulic ones. I thought that maybe the hose is deteriorated inside and restricting flow but don't know for sure. What else would cause the box to lower so slow? Would take over 5 minutes and it should lower faster than it raises (about 20 seconds to raise). Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. The valve has 2 spools but 1 isn't being used. The valve has a P cast in it and 2702 and then a W, if this helps. The hydraulic fluid is red, so I'm thinking it's ATF. Dave

Someone MAY have added a "one-way" flow restrictor to slow the hoist's descent for safety concerns.

Also, I have seen the spring mechanism that centers the valve spool take in dirt that restricts it's travel. Could be that, or a cable/linkage problem that is not giving the valve spool full travel in the "down" direction.

It could have a flow restrictor that is OK for a fully loaded box to be lowered WO smashing something. If so a restrictor that is flow sensitive to restrict flow as needed will be the ticket. JimN

The control is outside the cab. Even if I go under the truck and push the valve all the way in to lower it, it is really slow. There is a swivel type adaptor where the return line goes into the valve. Maybe it's a restrictor. I guess I need to take the return line off and put the loose hose in a pail and see if it lowers faster. Any other ways to check it? Dave

Some systems require running the PTO while lowering, They also use the cylinder as a reservoir, and need the pump to transfer the oil to the other side of the cylinder. BTDT

I tried it both ways. I just looked at a picture of a flow restrictor. I think that's what it has. I don't mind it lowering a little slower but it's way too slow. Can you get different flow restrictors? Dave

A flow restricter is a check valve with a hole
in the check ball. going up the pressure pushes
the ball off its seat, and you get full flow up.
going down the ball seats, and fluid can only
get out slowly, through the hole in the ball.
the purpose being that if a line breaks the box
will come down slowly, instead of slapping down
with a bang and killing someone. You can get
adjustable ones, or ones with fixed openings, in
several sizes. BRAND hydraulics, has a selection
of them, fixed or adjustable, in different sizes
of pipe thread. BRAND is a manufacturer, you
have to find a dealer, I think BAILEYS, or
SURPLUS CENTER has them. Probably BAUM IRON in
Omaha also, amung others.

boy i'd be careful doing it that way, maybe plumb in a shut off valve in the line, that way you could use the valve to throttle the fluid pressure. that box would come down hard without a restriction in the line.

I'll do some checking with a hydraulic shop. An adjustable restrictor would be good. I'd put the bucket of the Cat under the box so it couldn't come crashing down or lower the box first so it only drops about a foot. I'd only need to let the box down a little to see if it lowers faster. Thanks for all your guys help. Dave
