My son is riding a 6 speed Specialized bicycle across county. Started in Portland, Or and passed through Rapid City yesterday.
What's in store for him as he heads East across the state?
he says his legs and lungs are holding up well...it his wrists and butt that are taking the beating!

Been there several times... as he gets out of the Black Hills it will be reasonably flat for quite a bit of the state.

I admire people who take on an adventure like that! A big trek for me is about a two mile bike ride! Maybe I could manage to ride a motorcycle across the country... I guess we drive a car or minivan across the country every year (North to South).

How many time has broken down so far. That's a long ride on a bike tell him he can get a more comfortable seat at any bike shop and raise the handle bars to relieve the strain on the wrist. You need to modify a racing bike for a long trip to be more in tune for all day riding.

Yes, out of all the tri-bikes, road racer and cyclocross bikes we have at the house, he goes with a citi-style out in Portland because he wanted the 6 speed internal hub rather than a derailler set up. He says its been bombproff- which is why he went with it...but i think i'd have gone with a lot more gears and a lot less weight.
At least he put sknny old slicks on it.

I wish your Son a safe & fun trip. When I've driven across S. Dak. on the Interstate, it's seemed like a very long drive. Hope your Son has a good wind at his back. I'll say this, S. Dak. is an entertaining State: Great Faces, Great Places, you know. Mark SW Wis.

I hope he has a great ride across our state! I am on the eastern side, forcast is for very nice weather for the next few days.

He can get free ice water, and 5 cent coffee at Wall Drug, in Wall SD. Go swimming in the Missouri River, or catch some shore lunch Walleyes at Chamberlain. See the Corn Palace in my hometown, Mitchell. He can camp on my farm get a shower if he wants. I'm only 1/4 mile off his highway (Old US 16).
Is he old enough for an adult beverage?
