Broken door hinge pin on a truck?

I picked up my new to me 95 GMC Topkick. Is there a way to fix a broken top hinge pin on the drivers door? The top of the hinge pin is there but the wider bottom part of the pin is broke off. It doesn't look like the hinges bolt on, so I'm wondering if there's any easy way to fix it. Thanks. Dave

At your local parts supply house be it auto zone napa etc, there is a rack that is labeled as the HELP section. This rack will have some hinge pins, perhaps one fits your truck.

Go to your local auto parts/GM dealer and get one, same as the same year pickups. Though you will need a spring compressor tool for the door spring(makes it easier to remove). More than likely you will be replacing both pins and four bushings, but you could get by with just the pin. chris

Make sure you have an extra hand around when you start this project. To get the door out of the way to replace the bushings is awful heavy and extremely awkward by yourself.
Good Luck

The spring was laying by the bottom hinge. I'm not sure if the hinge pin is supposed to be replaceable. The bottom pivot is wider and the top of the pin looks like it's mushroomed in a X pattern. I'll check with a parts store. Dave

Any parts store should have the replacement pins. Matthies is right, you will need a compressor to re-install the spring for the detent that holds the door open. It's impossible to install the spring without one. The good news is the compressors are cheap, can't remember what I paid for mine, but it wasn't over $10-$15.

And you'll need someone or something to support the door while you're jockeying the hinge around. On a pickup, I can get away with a 2X6 parallel to the door on a floor jack, but on a bigger truck a helper would be ideal.

Hinges are welded on. To replace the hinge you need to drill the welds out and the replacement hinges bolt on.

To repair the existing hinges use GM part numbers:

12540326 Detent roller pin
15591898 Detent spring
88891731 Hinge pin, two per door
25640501 Retainer, hinge pin, two per door
16632192 Bushing, small, two per door
16632193 Bushing, Large, three per door

Replacement hinges may have steel bushings and the above brass bushings will not fit those hinges.

To replace the detent roller pin grind off the top part and drive to old pin out the bottom. Install the new pin assembly and apply a couple tack weld on the top to hold it in.

Thanks for all the help. I'll have to take a closer look at it. I thought I only needed a new hinge pin by where the spring goes but now that I've got more info, I'll take a better look. Dave
