O.T. Weed Question of The Week

Need some help fellas !! I have never seen Burdock spread like it has here in the past few years. We've tried several different sprays, but it's still comming back. Perhaps it's our timing of application, or just not hitting with the correct spraying program. Gonna have to spray off a very decent alfalfa stand (2nd year) because it's so bad. Any ideas fellas ????????

Can you describe it more in detail? Where are you located? Could you post a picture of the weed?

I've had good luck with using 4oz 2,4,D and 4oz of Roundup per gallon of water in a hand sprayer, works even better with some dish soap mixed in. apply to both the top and bottom of the leaves, will take up to two weeks to burn down compleatly.

I've never heard of burdock out-competing alfalfa before. The burdock can't take the intensive mowing cycles and dies off and certainly can't set seed since it takes all summer for that to happen.

Perhaps we are talking about a different weed. This is what we call burdock (and also cockle burr):
Greater burdock

Thanks for your advice fellas. Will try the 2-4-D and Roundup route. Also the information on Burdocks was enlightening. BTW, I'm in southern Ontario, putting up with too much rain. Couldn't buy a rain last year, can't get three dry days in a row this year --------- oh well, that's farmin' for you.

The picture of burdock is what we called cockleburr. I thought he might be referring to sourdock. We used to have some sourdock infestation in pasture fields, not much in hayfields.

I've never seen burdock stand up to a normal application of MCPA... We've got it around our buildings in places and that knocks it down annualy.

Yes that's the weed, didn't know it's also called curly dock. When mature they turn dark brown. Thanks for posting.
