I've got a LITTLE problem with the 318 Chrysler gas in that 7300 Oliver combine. I had trouble keeping it running at all at first. I changed points and plugs, set the gaps by the book. Problem was in the fuel system. There was a huge slug of rust in the neck of the sediment bowl and up in the bottom of the tank. I took the carb off,it wasn't gummy, but had some rust in it.It's just a 2 bbl downdraft automotive type carb. After I cleaned it and put it back on,it runs super strong, but it surges to beat the band. Probably 2-3 times per second when it's running wide open. At a dead idle, with the throttle in the "off" position,it runs excellent. Move it up to the "idle" position and it sounds like it's missing and it surges. The darndest thing is,the governor lever doesn't move when it's doing it. The only time it smoothes out is going up hill on the road. I can't jam enough oats up the feederhouse to smooth it out when I'm cutting.I've adjusted the carb and timing six ways from Sunday and it doesn't make any difference. I'm just afraid of getting the cylinder drive chain whipping and doing some real damage to the seperator. Any ideas?
