OT - ?Tranney dipstick '99 Grand Am ?

Daughter-in-law's '99 Grand Am 3400 v-6 is reportedly having trouble shifting. Told son to check transmission fluid. But we can't find the dipstick! Did find a port on left of engine, under manifold crossover pipe, below the air cleaner.... Difficult to access - burned fingers! No dipstick on that port cover. Is labeled "transmission fluid". So how do you check the fluid level in that thing?

What you are looking at is the vent, and also the fill hole. There is a plug by the right side(passanger side) cv shaft on the trans case. The trans should be at operating temp, in park running, and sitting level. You pull the plug, fill through the vent hole until ATF starts running out the plug hole.. Let ATF run out until it changes from a steady flow to a dribble, put the plug back in.

Yeah it`s a pain, and a real bugger to do without the car being on a hoist, but that`s it.. BW

I have a 2000 Grand Am and is probably the same. There is a 7/16 plug on the transmission case you have to be under the car to see it. it is located on the backside near the right axle. You take it out and put in transmission fluid till it comes out the plug hole. The fill plug is accessed from engine compartment,you will need a long funnel to fill. Must take it to a Dealer. I believe there is a recommended 100,000 mile check, but not sure. eases thing to do is ask a dealer.

1999 Pontiac Grand Am 3.4 V6 4 speed auto does not have a dip stick. According to the manual if the transmission is leaking fluid or shifting incorrectly take it to the dealer. Other than that the service interval for filter and fluid change is 50,000 miles. I hope this answers your question.

It is a challenging procedure to check the fluid. It must be done at a particular temperature. There is a plug on the transmission that is removed and when the fluid doesn't run out, it is full. The level will change however depending on the temperature of the fluid."
