Enhanced classic tractor display
Classic farm tractors and equipment have been displayed at Husker Harvest Days for many years. It’s always a popular spot for those who want to reminisce about yesteryear. But, the display will be larger this year and something new has been added.
The Lester Larsen Tractor Test and Power Museum at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is working with local classic tractor enthusiast Kenny Layher to beef up the antique equipment display. The museum, housed in the original 1920 Nebraska Tractor Test facility, is celebrating it’s 10th anniversary in 2008.
“Roger Hoy, director of the Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory, wants more exposure for the lab,” explains Jeremy Steele, a communications associate for the museum. “That’s why we are embarking on a multi-year process to involve the museum in the antique equipment display at Husker Harvest Days. We want to help Kenny develop a quality display with the help of the museum.”
Steele says the museum stafff is “easing into it”this year. “In the future we plan to have more educational exhibits as well as posters and advertising displays on the classic tractors and equipment.”
In addition to the classic tractors and equipment the exhibit at this year’s HHD will feature information about the museum as well as highlight the first 50 years of tractor tests at the tractor lab. “Our new traveling exhibit displays test results from 50 years of tractor testing, 1920 to 1970” notes Steele. “That’s over 1,000 tractors and we’ll have make, model and year posted along with pto and drawbar horsepower ratings.”
The test results are also posted on the Internet at http://tractorpedia.unl.edu.
Even though they won’t be bringing them to the show this year, the museum has a collection of 30 classic tractors as well as the historic oliver test car used for tractor tests decades ago. The Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory is known around the world as the leader in tractor testing and is the only one of its kind in the United States.
The Lester Larsen Tractor Test & Power Museum is supported solely through private contributions. For more information check out the Friends of the Tractor Test on the Web at http://www.tractortestfriends.com
