3-pt attachment won't release from PTO shaft

This is my JD 2020. I used my fairly new post hole digger attachement and am trying to remove it to put the bush hog on. Problem is, I can't get the post hole digger's drive shaft to release from the PTO shaft.

It has one of those spring loaded collets that you slide forward while you pull the attachment shaft off. I've WD-40ed it, rapped on it, pried gently on it (and not so gently), tried every contortion I can think of, made sure I had the collet shoved all the way forward -- nothing works.

The attachment shaft collar (the female part with the u-joint) is not frozen on the pto shaft, it wiggles nicely. Seems the little plunger that slides into the detent slot in the pto shaft is not disengaging.

Clue: this happened once before and my oldest boy went out there and had it off in two minutes. He's no where around now but he confirmed, that's how he got it off: slide the collet forward and pull the shaft off.

Any ideas?

Those can be hard to get off sometimes. You might try pushing it forward at different spots. Pushing it forward all the way may be to far.

The way your boy did it sound right for the ones I've seen. Maybe try pulling back on the whole joint first and then pushing the collar forward, maybe the balls are jamed a little bit and have gotten tight. Plus you probably just weren't holding your mouth right the first time. Now that you've taken a break and come in and asked this sit down, have a cold beverage or three and try it again in a little bit when your not so frustrated and I bet it'll jump off for you too.

When you do get it off, next time put grease on your PTO stub and on the inside of all your shafts.

I've lots of the old spring-loaded-pin-style PTO shafts get stuck on. When that happens I pop the pin out. Always wondered what I would do if one of the new right style ones got stuck. I really don't know how they come apart.

My disc mower has a new collar-style one and that got stuck once, but I managed to pry it off while holding the collar back. Made sure to grease it up good and it's been good since. Hopefully it never gets really stuck or I'm not sure what I would do.

With augers and PTO shafts I find that sometimes they just sit wrong. Kick the PTO in and shut it off again, sometimes it'll come now. Otherwise you may need a pipe wrench or a bar that you can get into the U-joints to try and turn the PTO shaft backwards. It won't turn much, but sometimes moving it just a few thousandths of an inch is enough to unbind it.

Go ahead and chuckle, Allen. That thing sure made me feel like a nit wit. Oh well, at least I didn't torch it off. Live and learn.

I had a lot trouble getting my mower off also. I always thought it was the mowers problem, but this year the baler would not go on. What the heck? I found that the grooves in the tractor shaft were "rolled" I found it with a straight edge. I touched it up with a Dremal tool, and wish I found it several years ago.

I have had the same darn problem on our digger. I was pulling it back and it would not come off.

Don't know why I really miss the old ones with the push button slider. But even that my lundell chopper works great on the old tractors, M and WD45 but on the newest ones I have to beat it on and off with a hammer.

Have the ball bearing type on the corn planter pump and every year to take it off we have to disassemble it no matter how much you lube it before hand.

I'm having a problem with a collar-type release right now myself on a tractor that has been exposed to the elements for many years. I'm soaking it with Liquid Wrench to try and help persuade it, but so far I can't get it off. The yoke will move about an inch back and forth, but just won't come loose. Should I try a pry bar?
