OT: Honda Rancher electric shift

I read an earlier post about 4 wheeler/quad recommendations and I would like to know if any of you have experienced the same problem I have with my 2002 Honda Rancher.

My machine will shift right after start up, but within a few minutes of ride time, the electric shift refuses to work. Whatever gear you are in, is where it stays UNTIL the machine is switched off and restarted. Evidently, this resets the shifter and allows it to work briefly before "sticking" again.

I have replaced the sensors, but still no joy. I am thinking it must be the command module...or whatever name Honda assigns to it. It only costs $425!

Can anybody shed any light on this problem?

I have that exact same quad. I have had only two failures, where I had to use the foot pedal. And those went away within a few minutes.
I have the complete service manual. I looked at it and in the trouble shooting there are dozens of steps to go through. But it states that a weak battery can cause this. So do some good testing on that battery, put it on a charger, or just get a new one. Is it the original?

SM further states this can be caused by faulty/slipping clutch. Inspect that.

Also can be caused by faulty speedometer. Watch your speedometer and see if that is acting erratically.

I think I would surely spend the money for the service manual and go through the checks on the system. There are 6 components to the system, not just the ECU.

Let me know and I'll do some further research when you get these things done.

Also consider putting this up on a honda four wheeler discussion board. They probably wouldn't be much help there if someone asked about a Farmall tractor?

Gordo,

I have a service manual...don"t think it is a Honda publication..but I followed the steps they outlined. There are 2 sensors...a shifter motor sensor and another whose name escapes me without referring tothe book. Both were replaced. The battery too, was replaced, although the original tested fine.

HOWEVER, you may have hit on something concerning the speedometer. Mine is broken....or rather it doesn"t give a display any longer due to a broken bezel/lense. Hmmm. I honestly couldn"t care less about a speedometer, but I doubt it can be bypassed. This machine has never been mudded or used to fjord streams. It has always been garaged and basically well cared for. I doubt there is 2,000 miles on it. It runs the very best in all respects....except the damned shifter refuses to work.

I bought a new 2004 honda rancher, it did the same thing right from the start, dealer couldn't find the problem. It had less than 300 miles when I got watered off one day and parked it in the woods for the next 2 years. Another dealer told me to remove the angle senser and if it said mexico on it could be fixed for nothing. The angle senser is on the right side of the electric shifting motor, not very big and has two wires, easy to remove and put back on. You might try that.

Also I want to let you know about the priming button. I live in SD and many of my friends have these Honda quads, They were having a little problem starting them at cold (below 15 degees) temps. I told them about that little primer button and all their problems went away.

Also don't forego the removal and cleaning of the exhaust/muffler as described in the manual.

Pays to read all the info in all the manuals. Training I got from being a Navy fighter pilot!

Hi mark,

Have you adjusted the clutch? Your owners manual will have the adjustment procedure in it and it's very simple to do, about 5mins.

T_bone,

The clutch itself is in proper adjustment and I think Gordo hit the nail on the head, concerning the speedometer being the culprit.

I have checked ebay and aftermarket suppliers for a new one and no joy, yet. I"ll come up with one by and by and hopefully get it fixed.
