New Idea power unit, combine, etc.

Hi. I have been thinking about purchasing a New Idea power unit and snowblower combo, but I can't seem to pick a starting price. I watched one sell on a sale a couple years ago for $1700 and sure wish I had that kind of cash on hand at the time.

What would you say such an arrangement is worth?

And for that matter--if I can get the various attachments for it for the basic farming practices (planting, spraying, cultivating, combining, picking, silage-chopping) I think that would be great too because I like the design and how you don't have to be working behind you all the time. But does anyone here have experience with these machines? What do you think of them? Would it be really hard to plant straight rows with a front-mounted, fixed planter?

As the latest generation in the family farming operation, I'm interested in looking in going a new direction but still keeping with the older equipment.

Dan, it's been a LONG time since I've been around the Uni-systems, but the cabs were very small and not much for operator comfort.
The one my uncle had used a husking bed to pick ear corn and had a separate unit to combine beans. It took nearly half a day to switch from one to the other.
Things may have changed in the past 30 years, but that's how I remember it.

My neighbor told me that they made you become a pretty good mechanic if you had one, because they were built too light and you were always replacing bearings.

They are thw berries for chopping hay and corn.
We had a 702 diesel and have a 708 with the pukins engine They will chop faster with less HP than any pull chopper I"ve seen at the time they were made. With the corn sheller on they were not the best in the mud for getting around tended to be heavy on the one side since all the weight is on the left. they did take 3-4 hours to switch from one to the other though and if you get the different attachments for it and the newer power unit make sure of the rear mounts as there was a change. There not tough, if your handy with a torch and welder.

I purchased an engine off one, several years ago.
It was a LeRoi, 4 cylinder. LeRoi is no longer
in business, but those engines were built for
LeRoi by Allis Chalmers, and were the same as
WC tractor engines, also used in AC cotton
pickers, and small road graders. Plenty of parts available from NAPA.
